Draft Needs By Profootball Talk...

G.M. Jerry Jones never has to worry about the short-term or long-term consequences of having a bad draft, since owner Jerry Jones would never fire him.

And we've always believed that the resulting absence of ultimate accountability for bad draft and free-agency decisions had made it hard for the Cowboys to regain the prominence that the franchise enjoyed when G.M. Jerry Jones was being assisted by coach Jimmy Johnson.

There's now another new coach of the Cowboys, and yet again he's no Jimmy Johnson. But for a four-year stint with Bill Parcells at the helm, who did well but all things considered underachieved in Big D, the coaches of the franchise have been so-so at best.

Wade Phillips is no exception.

Though the new head coach is a defensive specialist, Jones could finally be realizing that offense, not defense, was responsible for the three championships that the team won in the 1990s. And offense should therefore be the focus of this draft.

1. Wide receiver: Though the team has two starters in Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn, both will be 33 at the start of the season. And that's ancient for wideouts. It's time to add some guys who will take the lead at the position in the not-too-distant future. Since Jones the G.M. won't get fired by Jones the owner if he reaches for a guy who has had a substandard pre-draft workout, a risk-reward player like Ted Ginn could be the guy at No. 22. Or maybe even Dwayne Jarrett.

2. Offensive tackle: Depth is needed, despite the possibility that Leonard Davis will eventually take over for Flozell Adams at left tackle. Marc Colombo is a year-to-year performer, and it might be a good idea to start grooming someone else to take his place.

3. Guard: Marco Rivera is done, so depth is needed even with Leonard Davis now starting on the right side.

4. Cornerback: Anthony Henry could be moved to safety, making the need significantly greater for more cornerbacks who can play at a high level.

5. Defensive tackle: Jason Ferguson is a streaky player, with a reputation for going a little soft in any and all non-contract years. It's important to have someone ready to step in, if necessary, in this key area of the team's defense.

I'm not sure that's correct. I don't know that either the defense or offense "won" championships.

I do know if you hold teams to 17 or less points per game all you need is a good offense to win. How many SB champions won primarily because of their offense first and defense second? As many as the other way around?

I don't want Davis playing anywhere but guard. He doesn't have the quickness and finesse to handle the quick DE's in the NFL. He struggled big time here in AZ when they put him at tackle.

This is a pathetic article. The writer is obviously filling space, and hasn't a clue as to the make up of the Cowboys, oir their needs.

Why do these people have to emerge in the month of April, only to disappear in May?

The Cowboys are going to draft a WR, that is almost given. Ted Ginn isn't a number one receiver, and therefore won't be drafted in round one by the Cowboys.

Anthoney Henry isn't going to be moved to Safety, even if the Cowboys draft a CB in the first round. It's going to take a year of development to get a CB ready to play.

Leonard Davis isn't going to play left tackle on the Cowboys' line, unless it's an emergency. If he couldn't play left tackle in Arizona, he can't play LT in Dallas.

Ferguson has played well his first two years in Dallas, and has not been streaky. He has been worn out a few times, but he isn't streaky.

This writer is probably from Philadelphia.

That better not happen. Davis has proven he can't play the position.

I just simply don't agree with that. We didn't win anything important in January until Charles Haley arrived. This just in......he played DEFENSE.

Guys, you can't be overly critical of stuff like this... It was written by a guy who is covering 32 teams. He certainly isn't as dialed in to the Cowboys as folks who surf here 24/7. He actually writes better than some of the drivel found on pay sites. And on slamming his Henry to FS comment... unless you have personally talked to Wade about it, your guess is as good as his.

Ferguson was not in a contract year and had an exceptional season. Sounds like someone who just read an old report on him and didn't do any homework.

What won Super Bowls was all-around balance and in some cases dominance on both sides of the ball especially in 1992.

Number one ranked defense, ball control and loaded offense that was pick your poison when it came to defending it.

Special teams led league in blocked kicks and punts, Kelvin Martin led league in punt returns.

Start with balance then progress to dominace once marque players and depth are established, that was key to the 90s Cowboys.

If we draft Ted Ginn JR we will know that Jerry is back to his old ways, just a thought but didnt we avarage like second in kick returns last year in the NFL so why would we want a retun specialist/WR? If one more report says move Anthony Henry to Saftey I may well shoot myself! Fergy did alright he is not the problem its the depth behind him and the fact he is like 70! I would like to see us take a WR in the first if one is sitting there but please jerry dont reach really like Bowe but wouldnt mind trading down ala 2 years ago to get 2 1sts next year when we may need more impact from rookies.

No, he is a lawyer, .. that is a Steeler fan, .. living in West Virginia.

I know the guy, you won't see much complimentary from him about Dallas, .. trust me.

He has proven that anybody, and I mean anybody can throw up a web page and people will read it.

Kudos to him though because he is making money from it I understand, at least that is what his wife (also a lawyer) told my wife.

On the money. They were dominant.

I still believe a team with a top five defense can win it all if they can score 3 TDs a game. I think that is easier than a great offense and average defense.
