DRAFT PRIORITY: Shore up the middle of the lines

After all the holes Dallas has filled in free agency, one thing is clear. They can go inhto the draft with much more flexibility, since they have no holes to fill at any starting position.

But at some point in this draft the Cowboys MUST shore up the middle of their offensive and defensive lines. That's because behind Gurode there is noone capable at center; and behing Ferguson at nose-tackle there is noone capable. If either one goes down, Dallas is in trouble. The daraft simply MUST address these deficiencies.

I agree in that the game is won in the trenches. There isn't very many NT this year and I don't think Jerry spends more big money on the OL.
WR, pass rusher, CB, Safety, maybe Branch at NT in that order is my preference.

We've already addressed the FS position with the signing of Hamlin this year. Very doubtful we do anything more in this year's draft.

While we are okay at our starter positions, there are serious backup needs which must be filled with first day picks cause hopefully these players will become starters shortly. With no order of preference, we need

1. Backup NT who can initially backup Ferguson & replace him by 09.
2. CB who can shortly challenge/replace Aaron Glenn & thereafter Chris Henry
3. WR to replace TO ias the #1 WR in 08.
4. OT who can challenge Adams since it doubtful we re-sign him given his age and big bucks necessary
5. ILB to replace Fowler & challenge eventually James or Ayodele
6. OC to backup Gurode and who hopefully can also play another OL position.

I believe that the Cowboys will address backup center in the later rounds of this years draft.

As for NT, I would like to have a plan B for the season and beyond. But I'm not sure that it will come in this draft.

There might already be one on the roster.

I'd like Kasey Studdard or Lyle Sendlein, OC (6th) & Paul Soliai, NT (3rd).....I don't really see a OC worth taking in the 4th-5th round area.....

I liked him. Very enthusiastic about the Cowboys on draft day. I hope things work out for him.

Typical article...

It's always "Our backup's suck -- we need new backups" without knowing if any of them can play.

I still think we have needs at every position despite everyone saying we are set. Really, is there any position on the field that could not be upgraded except Ware and Newman?

As thin as we were at NT last year, you would have expected a guy like Staley would at least play a little...... and he didn't.

I think that speaks volumes to whether we are counting on him at all.

Well, that was the BP mantra. Never play the backups. Who knows how well he can play? I'd like to see him get a lot of playing time in preseason.

i don't think this was a backup issue -- remember we cut Staley and didn't even try to sign him to our PS. That's how bad he was.

According to the reports out of Miami, he greatly improved while he was there. Again, we need to see him in preseason.

Its Stanley and he was with the Jags and improved a lot= so we grabbed him first opportunity. BP said that the Jags really taught him a lot about playing NT. It will depend on what Wade thinks of Stanley on whether we look hard for one in the draft.

Improved to "just good enough to take the 53rd spot on a roster"
