It's been a busy day for Andy Ross, an agent in Octagon Sports' football group, which is responsible for managing 12 players in a 2013 NFL Draft that starts in a couple short hours. He's representing two players in this year's class, one a potential first-rounder who could hear his name called on Thursday night. While preparing for what he calls an agent's Super Bowl, he's had to spend a good portion of the day handling concerns of clients already in the league. One client is facing a legal issue which requires Ross to coordinate with the player's attorney in a series of calls throughout the week. Another veteran free agent is trying to get a new deal, something Ross is managing on a hourly basis as he works with teams to arrange a new contract...

I know they liked Pugh and he could have very well been the guy they targeted in a trade down....but I have to say that I am glad the giants took him as I was never too high on the guy and think we got the better player in Frederick whether he was a reach or not.

He's a bit of a project for sure.

I like the upside but I don't even see 1st round talent even if he pans out.

That guy just looks like a NYG lineman though.

The Giants have really gotten off the hook from drafting Pugh so early.

Dallas trades down from to 31 and gets both Frederick and T Williams for the 18th pick. It sounds like if Pugh was there at 31 they would have taken him (but still would have also gotten Williams).

But yet at pick 19, the Giants take Pugh...and Pugh only. They get little grief for it.

The Bears were just as bad or worse the very next pick when they grabbed Kyle Long. At least at the time, it seemed like a reach.

Of course, this is just my opinion. These guys could end up Pro Bowlers in a year or two and make those picks look real good.

I'd have hated Pugh in the first. But the Jerry Maguire elements of this story were pretty appealing. And there are a few Cowboys tidbits sprinkled in there.

I fully agree. Nothing against either player but the pundits were quick to go after Dallas and gives a free pass to NY and Chicago for what has to be called a big reach since neither player was even mentioned as 1st rd picks by any of them. Dallas using the 31 pick of the 1st rd on one of the top Centers in the draft and getting a quality player at WR in Williams does not look that bad.

That was by far the worst pick in the first, I thought for sure they'd take Floyd at 20 so they could let Melton walk next year. For them to also pass on Floyd along with the NYG that tells me Floyd was severely overrated.

Actually Pugh WAS considered a first round pick by the person on the panel that said he had Travis as a third round pick (Mike Mayock).

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/mock-drafts

Of the nine people doing first round mock drafts....3 Had Pugh in the first round, 1 had Long in the first round and 0 had Frederick in the first round.

I think Pugh's value will ultimately come down to whether he plays RT or OG. If he manages to successfully play RT it was a good pick, if he's just a run of the mill OG (can't see him being a great 1) then its a pretty crappy pick. Even above average OG's aren't worth 1st round picks, especially at 19.

Apparently in this draft they were seeing as 2 went in the top 10 and 4 in the top 20. If you count Pugh and Long as OGs.

Based on how I saw the draft playing out I thought Eric Reid, Tyler Eifert and Justin Pugh were realistic options at 18 if the Cowboys didn't trade back so I didn't view them as reaches. I thought Reid and Pugh were going to be drafted a lot higher than some expected on this board.

Regarding Kyle Long, Gil Brandt reported that the Colts and Packers were taking him if available in the 1st...

Both Long and Pugh were much higher rated players to the people who have criticized the pick. Many having them both in the 1st round.

I wasn't a Pugh hater. We did have a few here that were.

I think most (not Mayock) assumed he would go in the 25-45 range.
Long was projected by most to go even later.
I just throught

Pugh for the 19th pick
or
Frederick Plus Williams for the 18th pick were not wildly different.

Kiper had Long at 23rd overall. Pugh 31. Frederick 87.

Scouts Inc. had Pugh 27, Long 33, Frederick 64.

You don't have to agree with it, but it's not like those guys are reversing course just to criticize the Cowboys.

My point was that Frederick PLUS Williams evens it out some.

You know I didn't like what we did in the 1st round (or in the 1st three pick for that matter)

I'm more on your side. I had Frederick 50th. I think both Kiper and Scouts Inc. underrated him. I'm just saying they can't be questioned on why they criticize the Cowboys for taking Frederick and not the Giants and/or Bears for taking the players they took. They considered those guys 1st round possibilities and had Frederick significantly lower ranked.

Yep. They're just judging off of their own boards, which is what they should be doing.

And also, who really cares what the talking heads think? I would like to know more about how other teams rated the C prospects, though. I have a feeling we had a higher grade on Frederick than just about everybody.

I think teams in general saw it similar to Gil Brandt. He had Frederick around 30 prior to the combine and dropped him to the 40s because of the poor 40 time. The pure ZBS teams likely dropped him a lot further since that is essential to their scheme.
