It would seem as though low end draft picks (rounds 4-7)will have a hard time cracking this roster unless they serve a special purpose. (Example: Punter, Kicker, return specialist, special teams).

With that in mind, it would seem as though it would be better off consider moving up a couple of spots to get a guy we really want and need who can help us, using low end picks to facilitate the move up, or trading off those low round picks and getting a pick in the higher round the next year.

I have already suggested a similar move to offer Atlanta (or BP and the Dolphins) our 4-7 picks for their 2 # 2's. My reasoning was that we don't need a lot of 2nd day players on this team, and rebuilding teams usually need as many picks as they can get, just to field a team. BP especially, is better at finding 2nd day gems than 2nd round values. We could get 2 RB's, 2 CB's a WR or any combination and solve all our needs at one time. Not too many people thought this was a good idea; that we need all our picks to find 4-5 good players...

We need, IMO

1 WR
possibly 2 CBs
1 SS
up to 2 RBs

It would be nice to be able to get,

1 NT to allow Ratliff to move to DE, and thus next year if/when Spears leaves, we already have our NT in place (i.e., looking forward) and we don't have to pay top $ for a FA NT.

1 Back-Up QB to develop as our number 2, unless we plan on having
B Johnson play until he's 41. Otherwise, once again, we'll have to go into FA and spend more unnecessary money for a quality back-up.

IMO, I think we really do need at least 5 picks, if not 7-8 draft picks, unless JJ is going to have the money to go into FA next year and sign guys as well as re-sign our own players.

We can probably get a back-up QB to develop between Rounds 4-7, a NT to develop between Rounds 3-7, plus our 3rd RB Rounds 4-7.

The whole point of the draft is to be able to get "cheap" help so we don't have to go into FA and pay serious money.

Unfortunately, the draft value chart says that would never happen.

The compensation for moving up from the 29th pick in the FOURTH ROUND to the DOLPHINS 1st pick in the FOURTH ROUND would be our Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Round picks and the value would still favor us. I think Parcells would make that trade though to acquire 4 picks.

I really think our draft strategy is going to have to be very flexible this year. I think you will see us moving up and down all day long. I don't see us sitting pat with pick #29. If a player we want slips, we will move up to get him with #29. If not I think we could slide down into round two with pick #29 and pick up another 3rd rounder, or defer it into next year like the pick from Cleveland this year.

Off the top of my head we should have several roster spots open.

1. JJ
2. TT
3. KD
4. J. Reeves
5. N. Jones
6. Fergy

-1 for Z. Thomas but we may even cut a few people in the offseason (T. Glenn)

We need immediate bodies to fill those positions and we need competition at other positions. I would rather have 7 or 8 shots at 5 positions than 4 or 5 shots.

Fassano
Aeyodele
Spears
Carpenter

for Miami's 2 #2's

5th
6th "09"
6th "09"
6th
7th

for Atlanta's 3 #2's

that would give us 8 picks on the first day. So say there is a 50/50 shot at getting a starter on the first day. I like the odds. 4 Possible play makers and 4 decent back ups.

Actually, I look for most of our 2nd day picks to make the team...don't forget we lost most of our key guys on the special teams units, units that weren't all that impressive to begin with.

We're going to have to retool the coverage units with some selections that may be strictly for that purpose in the later rounds.

We all want to see CB, WR, and RB addressed, maybe OG, but we need some guys to make some tackles on special teams.

As salary cap figures, etc. have come more and more into play, the draft value chart is becoming less and less useful. Several NFL people have said that the draft value chart is becoming antiquated and isn't nearly as useful a guideline as it was when Jimmy and Jerry started using it in the early 90's.

I believe that was talk over trading a top pick because of the current cost to pay a player at the top of the draft.

Most of us assume at this point that Zach Thomas beats out Ayodele & that Burnett remains the primary backup. Now we could keep Ayodele as another backup (could possibly also slide over to OLB) but he's expensive for a backup. The Cowboys have invited ILB Beau to VR in April; now maybe he's just a smokescreen or we really interested in him. Where this leaves Ayodele is anybody guess.

As for Glenn, it would be really great if he could play at a very high level for one more year, but just not optimistic
