Been thinking about our draft strategy for 2026.
We have 3 high priority needs on defense, as well as several "we also need" positions. LDE, MLB, CB.
But we only have 2 Starter picks in this draft. Right now # 14 and # 23. (I believe).
So, which position are we more likely to be able to use FA on ? MLB or CB. With our 2nd and 3rd rounders already being spent it's gonna be tough.
We should come away with 2 good starters, and several depth pieces with out 4th, and 3 5th rounders. BUT, we are gonna have to supplement the Draft with a high grade FA, or two. If we want to fill.the holes we have.
The first round looks to have players at positions we need, but without the early rounders to help offset those 2 - it's gonna take some maneuvering with FA. I like the players we traded for, but it's unfortunate we not have more fire power to pick up the extra positions that a 2nd and 3rd rounders would give us.
It will be very interesting how they handle this - LDE and LBer ? Or LDE and CB.
What about safety, we're not getting a starter with our 4th round pick. Or offensive needs.
And if we do pick up a couple of players in FA, it should be easier to see what their plan will be for the draft.
I'm opposed to trading down with either of 1st. Round picks - as they should reap 2 good starters.
Thoughts ???

Plug the major holes in FA and ideally take BPA on defense unless there is a blinking light on offense.

Problem is I dont think there are impact players available in FA. I would 100% explore trading a 1st this year and next year to make something big happen.

Double Dip on Dugger, Jalen Thompson in FA. Seal off the Safety concerns, play more man and lessen the immediate need for a 1st Rd CB, allow them to play man with Cover-3 with a true FS.
.

We must trade down if there is decent value, we literally need half a defense. Even if it means picks the following year, unless we hit home runs on everything, its 2 years. It's funny no one has even stated our injury status on the team, and I doubt we will be this healthy again.

Think if Bailey or Bain is available with that 1st pick take one. We only have Easy and Houston on the roster for next year. The 2nd first would be more flexible with moving but Styles or Allen would solidify the LB spot if available.

Get great players.

Over-focusing on need results in Taco and Mazi type picks.

Respectfully, what you are advocating is drafting for need which has never worked out very well for the Cowboys. We need to add a linebacker in free agency. There are usually good quality starting level linebackers in free agency that won’t break the bank.

We need to go BPA in the draft. That’s how you add talent to a team. Then fill holes with trades or in the second wave of free agency.

Aveion terrell should be on the radar. I don't care how short he is or whatever.

He’s a cover corner I want with our first # 1 .

Diggs was jogging after a Charger steaming into the end zone . CB and LB please round one and Jerry has to find 2 quality FA defenders

No, reaching for need has never worked out. Everyone drafts for need, stupid not to.

Really, I would of thought trying to facilitate pressure, hurried throws is a better way to assist the Secondary. Diggs and Bland were never lock-down corners......ball-hawks, with Hooker playing a decent FS and a QB scared stiff of a Defense that varied up they blitz's. Without the pressure (from Micah and Co,) they wouldnt have gotten the picks they did.
Defense is way more system based.

We do need help at corner but we have a greater need at EDGE/DE. Part of our issues this year is that we’ve been playing a lot of five-man at the LOS and using the blitz to try and generate pressure. That’s a great recipe for getting torched in the passing game because you have one less guy in coverage.

Pressure begets QB stress which begets disruption which begets bad throws which begets poor throws/turnovers.

Bland but the foot surgeries are scary- he’s here for the next 2 years.

Can’t count on Bland he obviously has a chronic foot problem which playing a fast violent sport won’t help . Like I said originally CB & LB should be first round musts

Other than Revel at corner Dallas has no one . Diggs was jogging after Chargers burning him
And Bland has chronic foot issues which doesn’t lend itself to playing NFL corner . If and when Bland is fit for duty make him a FS which is less demanding

What about edge? Only 2 signed next year are Easy and Houston.

For realistic $ I want Clowney back and Jerry shoots his mouth off he has bank now that Parsons is GB problem so I suggest they get a competent Edge who can actually find the QB . You only have so many draft picks rounds 2 and 3 are gone
