Draft Thoughts

I think heading into the draft, front office is happier with the production with offensive side of the ball than the defensive side. So thinking that and obviously sticking with there recent draft philosophy (bpa/rkg), I could definitely see them draft a DT, CB/S, DE plus if a good WR falls to us in the first three rounds. Obviously if a guard is there rated as bpa or very close to they probably take it. But I don't see them as worried as some fans are and I have a feeling I'm going to be watching defensive heavy draft for the cowboys, and maybe a RB,TE, WR somewhere(not all three likely). The bad news for some is I think only 1 OL taken and its probably 3rd or later. I can actually see it going down like this

1st. DT
2nd. WR
3rd. DE or OL or LB
4th. CB/S
5th. RB
6th. TE or OL

If we got 2 starters(DT, S or LB) plus a rotational pass rusher I would actually be ok with it if they went out after the draft and signed Clabo, or even Moore. Although I agree that the online needs work, I also believe because we were always throwing cause we were down that it magnified the mistakes a lot. I think if we start getting some early leads going up a score or two we will see different play calling. Which will mean having our guards and tackles going down hill some more which will help. Sorry for rambling, my point is I see a heavy D draft this yr. That's just my thinking and I could be very wrong. What do u think?

I think if they get Richardson or Williams in the 1st, in the 2nd if Terron Armstead is there they are all over him. In the third is where I could see them go wr if Wheaton is there and if not then more likely safety or rb with Travis Kelce a possibility if there.

I think this is mainly going to be an offensive draft for us. We bolstered the defense significantly last offseason, and we're getting a bunch of good injured defenders back from injury.

The sole exception to that, and it's a big one, is if there's a first round DL available. I could easily see us taking Sheldon Richardson if he's there, or a DL in a first round trade-back scenario of the OGs are both gone when we pick.

I also see more of an offensive draft...we get one DL and on S somewhere in the top 3 or 4 picks and the rest Offense...2 OL, one WR, one RB...if they happen to pick up an additional pick, then perhaps they grab a blocking TE late as well

My last mock reflects this a bit. I think Hopkins and Williams are gone but if Woods is there in second we nab him. I think Bailey is a 3rd round talent for our scheme but could be wrong. Again if Taylor is there in 4th we should grab him. Otherwise grab best safety on board and hope the kid from Vandy is there in fifth. Duke might go earlier unfortunately. All in all I think based on who is left where we pick we could see a draft like this.

You definitely could be right and I wouldn't mind that either.

I like the idea of going DT in the first but I'm ok with Cooper at 18. I think we can get a G and T in the 3rd and 4th though. So I'm ready for most anything.

I really think that the Cowboys are committed to the BPA or near-BPA approach. I've heard Garrett, Stephen Jones and Jerry mention the term this year. I can't remember ever hearing Jerry specifically say the phrase Best Player Available prior to this year.

Loyal, I wouldn't be too upset with your mock draft, however I'm kinda soured on Taylor as his speed is lacking. I like Bell a little better as he's almost 20 pounds heavier and still ran a half second faster than Taylor. Although I could see Bell going earlier than we are willing to pick him. I actually can see us ending up with Ellington or Randle. Also, in your scenario, we'd absolutely have to sign Moore and one of Clabo/Winston, which I'm not sure we'd have money for, (although just cutting Free and giving his money to Clabo/Winston would be an instant upgrade). Our interior OL is atrocious. No QB can handle pressure up the middle which is what we constantly got. As opposing offenses have proven against our D, its easier to handle even the greatest edge rusher by scheming and chipping than it is to handle penetration in the middle. In other words, Free/Parnell could suffice if our OGs and C weren't as terrible as they were last year.

I like this mock a lot. It would fill a lot of needs for us.
