Drafting a FS is a mistake.

Hamlin is not a strong safety. Terrible open field tackler and just an averege tackler overall. JMO, he didn't get beat deep as much this year as last year, but adding a FS will result in us getting gashed for big runs like we did against B-Moore week after week.

Or maybe we missed RW...Having someone better in coverage than hamlin would be a plus however they also need to be good agianst the run. I also think it wouldn't hurt to get rid of Brown and Watkins since they both aren't what we thought.

The current trend in the NFL leans towards two safeties that are interchangeable. Having a prototype old school strong safety will get you abused through the air (see. Cowboys 06-07), and having safeties that are vulnerable against the run will get you gashed for big plays on the ground.

We need to add more than one safety to this roster IMO. Ideally, I'd lean towards two FS's with stronger than normal run stopping ability. Hamlin fits this mold, although he didn't act like it this past year.

Having your big hitting old school guys (Keith Davis) as backups for short yardage and special teams is a bonus.

RW is more of a liability in the passing game than Hamlin is in the running game. If the team cuts Hamlin, which I wouldn't do, I'd still cut RW38 and then sign the FS from the Rams and then draft Michael Hamlin to play SS

Michael Hamlin doesn't impress me at all. I'm just not a fan.

We need a free safety who covers our CB's mistakes and capitalizes on QB's mistakes. Teams aren't afraid to go deep on us. They know it will either be caught, end up as Pass Interference, or safely hit the ground. You do that against Baltimore, Indy, Philadelphia, and some other teams and that free safety will make you pay.

Darren Woodson was a strong safety, heck, he was a linebacker at Arizona State, but he had so much smarts and feel for the game, he got by at Free Safety for several years. Ken Hamlin is almost never there to make a play. At least Roy is a force against the run. He couldn't cover Wade Phillips on a fly route, but he will hit you.

Ken "the Hammer" Hamlin needs to go back to his High School and remember the fundamentals of wrapping up ball carriers. It's a technical problem and can be fixed with coaching and a willingness to improve. Roy's career can be saved if the Scheme allows for his strengths and does not put him in vulnerable positions.

I wouldn't go that far.

Guys we're gonna need both FS and SS. RW the safety won't be back unless he restructures a lot of money down. Watkins is a great special teamer, but he isn't as good as Killa, so he's gone. Brown just hasn't shown enough yet, but I'd give him another chance, his potential is enormous if he can get it all together. The guy Battle is just a camp body.

That leaves us with Hamlin, Killa, and Brown. Even if it just for depth reasons we'll need to get one of each. I like the idea of having 2 interchangable guys back there.

Just think if we had done the smart thing back in the day and traded down from that 8th pick and picked up Ed Reed instead of RW....

They arnt going to cut Hamlin, but he was far worse this yr than Roy Williams ever was, at least RW made some plays to negate some of his problems from time to time. Hamlin was horrendous vs the run and the pass. Guy made 2 or 3 plays all yr and almost single handedly lost the Baltimore game for us.

Roy's 2009 cap hit is approx $7.175 M.
If released his cap hit would be approx. $5.55 M. So it would free up about $ 1.6 M in cap room.

Hamlin's 2009 cap hit is approx $5.805 M.
If released his cap hit would be approx. $7.5 M. So it would actually cost us an additional $1.695 M in cap room to let him go.

If Hamlin is let go after 2009 we would create some cap room... $7.096M cap hit if he is still on roster, $6 M cap hit to let him go. Hamlin signed a 6-year deal but there is no way he sees the end of that contract.

So in reality we do need to think about two new safeties very soon.

I'd like to draft a starting safety this year and next year.

Moving past Roy38 and Hamlin will be a good thing.

I am willing to Ken Hamlin another year before he starts getting the Roy Williams 38 treatment, he definitely has room for improvement this year, I hope to see him here in Big D for the off season to show his commitment. If not than I am for getting someone else, unless he is all in with the cowboys let him find someone else to play for after next year. I would also like to see him trade in those things on the end of his arms for hands. It would be nice to just make the simple catches this year hell with the one handed tricks. Come to think of it this year he was just another guy. We seemed to have collect a couple more of these fellows than we need.

Hamlin won't get cut this year. Possibly next since the cap hit would actually be slightly less to let him go than it would be to keep him but it's not going to happen this year.

At one time, maybe. When was the last time Roy really hit someone? Heck, when was the last time he had a tackle for a loss? And this is with the team's attempt to get him closer to the LOS.

He doesn't even really seem interested in wrapping up anymore (see Olsen, Greg).

I don't how anyone can consider him a "force against the run" at this point in his career.

Well said. Hamlin needs to learn to tackle and be moved to SS. What a horrible resigning that was. ****.
