I think it makes sense to invest a mid tier draft pick on a QB if there is a QB available in that range worth the pick. Maybe a player in the second to third round. Trading back in the first or second round to acquire an additional pick would be beneficial so that we could acquire the QB without having it come at the expense of numbers at other positions.

I think the main benefit to that is that you draft the guy to serve as the backup to Romo NOW.... either this year or next year. If he supplants Orton this year or next year, then you save the cap hit that the backup QB would get. Plus you develop him and would know what you have a couple of years down the road and if you hit big on him and he is capable of being your franchise guy then it pays off in spades.

By the time he is ready to be the starter, he is almost ready for a 2nd contract. Draft picks are the primary salary cap management tool. You need to get production from draft picks on their initial (cheap) contract in order to field a quality team within the bounds of the salary cap.

The idea scenario is to get the latest pick that could be the #2 QB as a rookie. That would allow you to save cap space and a roster spot by not having to carry a veteran #2 QB.

I agree with the bold portion of your text as it pertains to cap management but ideally having a guy on your roster who is capable of taking over for Romo eventually is critical, since you can't win if you don't have a franchise caliber QB.

Garoppolo or die.

LOL -- gosh, that sounds a mite drastic but I was just about to suggest we take Garoppolo in the third when I saw your post.

Actually, I suppose he might not even be there that late but It'd be hard to take him any sooner and bypass our DL.

I'm 100% behind this. Grab a project, let him learn for a couple of years behind Romo, and let him loose in year 3.

We tried this with Stephen McGee. There is no guarantee this will work. I wouldn't mind trading a 4th for Kirk Cousins. Screw Ryan Mallett/MattJones.

McGee was a bad pick though, he couldn't read a d to save his life and had no pocket awareness.

That was doomed from the start, McGee had very few traits you look for in an NFL QB. I'm thinking more along the lines of a Ryan Mallett type (with less of a record).

Yeah, McGee was a bad pick. He got so nervous in the pocket.

If nothing else, drafting a QB would allow the team to move on from Orton and his cap hit. What the heck, trade up and get Johnny Football. That pick would provide years of entertainment. This board would never be the same.

Its never a good idea to take a qb in the mid rounds. Name me 10 guys drafted in rounds 3-7 (drafted, not udfa) that you would want as your franchise qb. It's a short list with a few exceptions (Wilson being the obvious), but the vast majority of QB's taken in that area are a waste of a pick.....unless you're going for a career backup

If we take 1 in the 7th or with a comp pick fine, but I'll be pretty upset with anything higher. Especially in such a deep draft class
