The interview after the game................
This hit, I understand why the called it and under the strictest interpretation of the rule, it was a penalty. However, the league fining him 16K for the hit, that I do not agree with at all. It was not malicious and it's not Brooks fault that Brees is a midget. I think that was a cheap shot by the league and pretty low class. That should be reversed IMO.
I don't think the hit was illegal but can see why they called it. Adding a fine to it is just insult to injury.
Just another example of why I'll stop caring after this season. Today's rules suck and having games decided on penalties on perfect plays by the defense just isn't fun.
The fine was simply to cover up the fact that the refs messed up so bad and also to set a precedent that players can be fined for just about anything....2 years from now after the same thing gets called and fined a couple more times, we'll forget all about this one. This hit, I understand why the called it and under the strictest interpretation of the rule, it was a penalty. It's not going to get more forgiving if that's what you mean. Two years from now, I doubt this rule is still on the books, as is.
49ers/Saints game wasn't decided on a defensive penalty. People act like that penalty occured on the last drive with a few seconds left.
That fumble occured with 3:14 left in the game and the ball on SF's 35 yd line. At that point, SF had generated exactly TWO yards the entire quarter. Were they going to suddenly generate enough offense to sustain a drive and keep the ball away from NO when they hadn't been doing it all day? See below for answer.
SF got the ball back with 2:06 on the clock, game tied at 20, and went 3 and out on a drive lasting all of 15 seconds. Fifteen seconds, but they were going to miraculously hold onto the ball for the rest of the game had they got the turnover... What had you seen to give you that indication? Their 189 yard total offensive output?
Anyway, they give the ball back to NO with an extra 15 yards for fair catch interference and let Brees carve them up down to the 12 yard line. It was decided on a penalty alright. A special teams penalty.

Not a chance, imo.At some point, the NFL is going to have to deal with the fact that you have to let defenses play defense. This is a bad rule because, in cases such as this, there is no real way to avoid these kinds of calls. I suspect that the rule will change.
That neck strectch vid is funny stuff

Not a chance, imo.
The NFL brass wants more scoring and offense. They could care less about letting the defense play.
The tuck rule had to go away because it was too unclear and hard to make the right call. If the NFL had its way, you wouldn't be able to touch QBs as is. I dont agree for one second that they care about defense...everything they have done over the years is designed to make it easier to score. Changing the rules for DBs, saying you can't hit the QB, all but eliminating big hits over the middle...what have the ever done to help defenses?I don't agree. The tuck rule is a perfect example IMO. It compromised the game too much. I agree that they want more offense but not at the expense of the game itself. I think they know that they can't completely slant it or they will lose fan base. That's where they are headed now with this kind of rule.
I think it will be changed.
