Yes, you said that the limited release was a part of the Apple hype machine, implying that the limited amount of phones isn't a function of not being able to build them fast enough but rather is a function of Apple creating hype.

I said that the limited release could be a result of actual production issues (i.e., supply not being able to keep up with demand). If this were the case with other producers, it would show that production of this type of phone is difficult. But other producers don't have this issue because they don't have that demand problem at launch (or over the life of the phone, for that matter).

I have the Droid and I'm a little disappointed. Largely because I bought it right before the Droid X was announced, so I kicked myself for not waiting.

It was a great phone when it came out, but was quickly surpassed by the Incredible, X, and EVO from Sprint, plus the Galaxy phones from Samsung.

If I were you I'd go with either the X or the new Galaxy for Verizon.

Well, the original Motorola Droid has a slide-out horizontal keyboard. The Droid X is faster, has a better camera, and has a huge screen without a hardware keyboard. The Droid 2 is modeled after the original Droid, but faster with an improved slide-out keyboard.

There's also the HTC Droid Incredible which is fairly similar to the Droid X, but with slightly lesser specs, slightly smaller screen, etc.
 
As an iPhone user myself. They are nice but the iPhone 4 isnt that great. I would go driod if I were you unless you want a "status symbol" phone.

I would wait to get the Droid X or Galaxy as Motorola is coming out with 7 new models by Christmas which will make the X and old news.

Seeing it's still going to be a few months until the iphone is available with Verizon I think I'll go with the Droid X for the time being. I signed up with Verizon just over 2 years ago and am due for an upgrade. The LG Voyager I have isn't cutting it anymore so I'm going to make the switch now. Once the iphone is available I'll wait for the feedback to see how it's performing on Verizons network and if the reviews are good I'll just go ahead and purchase it.

I think they both have real strengths. (I'm an Android user - Nexus One)

iPhone definitely has MORE the better games as of right now overall. (though Android has some great games too) That said, all the big developers have went full bore into Android development now though. The Android app store is growing at a crazy rate and there are a lot of great apps now. For the iPhone the downside is some of the best apps on Android you can't get on iPhone because Steve Jobs is an self-righteous egotistic idiot. (of course you see ole Steve Jobs starting to cave in to the pressure now since Android is whipping everyones *** in sales right now)

The biggest issue I see with Android is the fact that not all phones are the created equal. Some of the phones are clearly of lessor quality. Some of the Samsung phones GPS sucks. (read not very accurate) Thus far, I think the Nexus One is by far the best quality phone even if the camera is slightly less and the screen is slightly smaller than some of the others. (Take into account that I haven't had a Droid in my hands either) Quality wise, (how it's built) I liken the Nexus One to the older iPhones. (It's better than the iPhone4 quality wise) Google didn't skimp when they made it. A buddy I work with bought a Vibrant (I think it was the Vibrant, it's with T-mobile) The GPS is sub par and the phone is extremely light and the casing feels like cheap plastic. (not that it hurts the phone unless you drop it)

I love my Android phone. My wife has been a die hard Sidekick fan and has an iPod touch for her music. Her contract on the Sidekick ends in about two months and since Sidekicks are dead now. She has decided that her next phone is going to be an Android phone.
 
I find HTC to be the best phone maker. I really like the HTC Sense UI on the Desire.

The caveat with all these android phones is that it makes app development more difficult, so you will fine many apps that simply don't work on your phone, which is less likely with the Apple Store.

anecdotal evidence aside, it is common knowledge that deployment on the android is more difficult and prone to error because of all the difference devices running the o/s

This is true. It actually plagues iPhone3 / iPhone4 phones too for many apps. It's more pronounced on the Android since some of the phones very greatly hardware and screen size wise.

but even so, at least the free market gets to choose which apps to use, not some clown in his ivory tower.
