Below are some 2017 stats, comparing sacks and pass rushing attempts for Dallas DTs with some of the most widely regarded DTs in the game. This shows the amazing productivity David Irving had last year when sacking the passer.

Pass Rushing Snaps Sacks Pass Rushing Snaps Per Sack
Aaron Donald 558 11 50.7
Geno Atkins 501 9 55.7
Kawann Short 494 7.5 65.9
Gerald McCoy 474 6 79.0
Fletcher Cox 548 5.5 99.6
Ndamukong Suh 534 4.5 118.7

David Irving 228 7 32.6
Datone Jones 69 1 69.0
Jihad Ward 70 1 70.0
Makiek Collins 428 2.5 171.2
Brian Price 81 0 #DIV/0!
Richard Ash 124 0 #DIV/0!

Inconsistent??? His efficiency is off the charts.

Go back and look at his numbers, especially in comparison to everyone's pet cat Maliek Collins.
I am saying he disappears. Its very easy to have high efficiency when you are missing time every season.

Maliek is always injured as well but yet the expectations are never as sky high as this undrafted FA.

Heck Tapper has done squat but still gets more passes. Same with Taco, Jaylon and all the other drafted players.

Irving has produced and improved at a ridiculous rate from day one as a low priority signed FA. Yet he gets all the scrutiny and blowback.

Thank God Leon Lett did not play for Garrett and current fanbase.

Really? Irving has been an idiot since college. Its not news. Look at what he is doing to himself in arguably the biggest year of his life. He has been inconsistent due to his availability. Collins hasnt missed GAME TIME due to injuries, Tapper is a write off, Jaylon played a full year missing no games getting better as the season went on. Taco is apparently doing very well in his second year. Irving is in year 3 and his missed almost more games than hes played because of his own stupidity. Dez got destroyed on this forum when he missed time. During a contract negotiation. You going to tell me Irving has accomplished more than Dez while wearing the Star? Give me a break man.

Was Such a good investment for LAR?
Is Maliek Collins worth some of the hype or credit he gets on this board?

David Irving is a game changer no doubt, but he needs a good running buddy at 1Tech.

Yep. Aside from maybe Tyron Smith, Irving has the most physically gifted body on the team
I think I agree with that. The other elite athlete is Zeke. His speed and agility at 230 pounds is elite.

There are a lot of players on the roster with very good athleticism but only a few freaks.

The college version of Jaylon was a freak.

Byron Jones is close and definitely a freak in some areas (Jumping, Speed) but I think his agility might be somewhat limited.

Vander Esch is somewhat of a freak athlete.

Tavon Austin speed/agility.

Connor Williams is close.
La'el is close.
Randy Gregory is close but he's not really on the roster.

I'm fine not having a lot of freak athletes. DLaw is not one but he's a very good player.

They had freak athletes that either could play (AOA) or just didn't quite live up to their physical ability (Bruce Carter).

Did I mention Dez? Dez supports my stance rather than yours, he is another example of heightened expectations for a player who is deemed unlikeable. Just like Irving. Availability is availability. Collins' expectations are less just because his availability is based on injuries even though when he is on the field he is no where near the playmaker that Irving is but Irving is the one that needs to be ridiculed and threatened because his availability is less valid???? Players who cannot produce due to injuries, off field issues, etc. all fall in that category but some are attacked more than others.

These attacks are not based on logic or even value factors, but completely on likeability. YOU do not like Irving. YOU probably did not like Dez. Or Haley, or Lett, or even Irvin. Jimmy would have loved Irving, just like he loved Lett and Irvin. Jimmy tolerated but controlled his playmakers (on the field), JAGs he could care less about. To field winning football teams, that should be the rule.

I loved every player you just brought up. But sure. I do like Irving I just think he needs to get his priorities straight. That’s literally all I said. And that he is inconsistent. Don’t know why you’re freaking out about it.

The guy came into OTAs out of shape because he was fighting to keep his daughter and allegations of DV. I believe his priorities are straight.

PED suspensions is different story but let's not lump all these issues together and paint him to be some awful and irredeemable human being. We all have our challenges and some people have more than others, but I will side with a guy trying to keep his kid.

I get it. But you do realize how many people go thru this and still manage to make it into work right? I know single moms with more than one job fighting dead beats to keep their kids. Don’t miss a day of work. It’s an excuse man. Plain and simple. Rolando McClain took time off to be with his family. That worked out badly. Not comparing the 2 obviously but whatever. Everyone has personal crap. Zeke was fighting a suspension and missed ZERO time last season with his team.

What's missed in that is that his sack production has come in a very small window.
He had only 1 sack in his final 4 games played.

In 2016 he had 3 sacks in his final 3 games but only 1 sack the rest of the season.

8 of his career 11.5 sacks came in the final three game so 2016 and the first four he appeared in during 2017.
That 7 game stretch was Aaron Donald-esque.
But he has 28 other games played with 3.5 sacks total.

In a lot of ways Irving is like a hitter that belts 20 home runs the first half of a season and then gets cold for a month them gets injured and misses the rest of the year.
His HR per at bat look great but his overall effect wasn't quite so grand.

It's worth trying to unlock the secrets of David Irving.
But let's stop pretending this guy is Aaron Donald lite and he shall rule the world.

DI's challenge will be his frame. It's massive and he can get too high. He has to stay in shape and show endurance to be an every down player and front line starter.
But even a bad version of him is good(great batted passes guy and pass rusher) provided he makes it to the games.
