The woman who falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of rape was convicted of second-degree murder Friday in the stabbing death of her boyfriend, reports the Associated Press.

Crystal Mangum, 34, was sentenced to between 14 years and 18 years in prison after a jury reached a verdict after six hours of deliberations.

Prosecutors said that Mangum killed 46-year-old Reginald Daye, who was stabbed on April 3, 2011. He died 10 days later.

Mangum said the stabbing was in self-defense, alleging that Daye was beating her in a jealous rage when she grabbed a knife and “poked him in the side.”

In 2006, Mangum falsely claimed Duke lacrosse players Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and Dave Evans gang-raped her at a team party where she was hired as a stripper. Duke’s head coach Mike Pressler was forced to resign, and the team canceled the remainder of the season because of the incident.

Wow.

On a tangent, that whole situation was so messed up. Those students never were given fair treatment. If anyone has the time, I would strongly recommend reading Until Proven Innocent, by Stuart Taylor and KC Johnson. Great book, counters a lot of the accusations and stereotypes about the lacrosse culture as a whole, all in the context of this case. Really, really good read, even if you aren't a lacrosse fan.

Haha, classic.

I know around these parts its a hard sell, but the fact that Archer is a lacrosse player, and not another type of athlete, does speak to the culture that permeates the game.

Yeah definitely just having some fun with ya. Back in HS a lot of the guys I played football with played Lacrosse instead of Baseball in spring. Basically football culture but with more refined "gay" jokes. I'm from from DC, and it is big in MD.
