Dumb coaching moves of the past

Situation 1.

Way back in 1980 the Rams were playing the Falcons. The Rams were able to hold the Falcons to a 4th and goal from the 2 yard line. The Falcons FG team was on the field, but there was a penalty. I think it was illegal motion. The Rams head coach Ray Malavasi accepts the penalty, so now it's 3rd and goal from the 7. Atlanta proceeds to get a TD.

Why did they accept the penalty? The coach said he thought it was a 10 yard penalty. And if they got a sack they could take them out of FG range.

Situation 2.

It's 1995 and the Cowboys are playing the Chargers. Cowboys up 14-9 and get a TD. Cowboys decide to go for 2 points. Why? Because a chart says that if you're up by 5 you should go for 2. They even show the chart. But it doesn't make sense.

Convert the 2 point play and you're up 13 points, two TDs. Kick the extra point and you still need two TDs to tie or take the lead. Miss the two point play and now the Chargers can get a TD + 2 point play and they're only down a FG. That's exactly what the Cowboys did, miss the 2 point play and were up 20-9.

Cowboys still ended up winning. But that's despite Coach Switzer. Who just went by a chart and couldn't be bothered to do the math in his own head.

Switzer was 7 years retired when Jerry dug him up to babysit Jimmy's team. Cut the guy a break.

Was he really? That says a lot more about Jerry than anyone else. Either way, I can't blame Jerry for the inability to do simple math. Anyone should be able to add. 1+1 equals 2, not 3.

Just prior to Jimmy resigning, Jerry publicly boasted at an NFL party in Orlando that "there were 500 coaches who could have won a super bowl with that team." That party is referred to as the night the cowboy dynasty died. Jerry hired Switzer out of retirement to support that boast and b/c Jimmy and Switzer didn't like each other. Jerry was correct in his assessment. What he got wrong was there weren't 500 coaches who could put that team together. Jerry's been looking for that guy since 1996.
