Dumb question about CD-ROMs....

Ya know when you go to the store and check out the blank CDs/DVDs and some of the CDs say "Music CD-ROM?" Well, what exactly does that mean? I've always used any ol' CD I bought for my custom music CDs, and never had any problems. Is it just an advertising trick to sell more? Is it formatted differently?
