Dunta Robinson shouldn't last long on the market

Texans will let top CB test the free agent market. Matt Bowen

It is normal for the NFL Combine to take center stage during the last week of February, pushing the veteran players to the side for a brief period of time.

But, with free agency kicking off on March 5 and names starting to become available, expect the talk to heat up in the hotel lobbies of Indianapolis this week when it comes to the top-tier free agents of the NFL.

And, according to reports, Houston’s Dunta Robinson will be one of those names after the Texans decided not to franchise their top cornerback.

Letting Robinson hit free agency could cost this Texans defense. He is a top-level man-to-man corner who can play press coverage. We talk about that all of the time when it comes to cornerback play in the NFL, but there are really only a few names — big names — who can consistently play man coverage from a press position, which is the hardest thing to do at this level.

You would think that the Texans would be wise to place the franchise tag on Robinson and spend the rest of the spring working on a deal that would lock him up for the next five or six years in a Texans uniform. And, I can’t imagine not hearing his name now floating around on the streets on Indy this week — because players like this don’t come around often.

Earlier this week, the NFP’s Joe Fortenbaugh listed four teams who could be a potential landing spot for Robinson in the case that these reports started to surface: Minnesota, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Baltimore.

Could you envision Robinson in Dick LeBeau’s scheme in Pittsburgh? How about in Minnesota? The possibilities and speculation will soon begin, but more importantly, if you are a Texans fan, do you really want to see this guy go?

Yes, he is going to be a high-priced player — always a risk when you pay out a monster contract at this level. But the Texans don’t need to lose skill players and playmakers on their defense right now. You need corners to beat Indy and you need playmakers to beat the Titans when it comes to the AFC South.

But, just like Julius Peppers of the Panthers, Robinson will be in high demand come March, because he’s too good of a player to pass up.

He had a pretty serious injury 2 season's ago (can't recall exactly what it was), but I don't think he's ever returned to the same caliber of CB as he was.

I think you're right.
This guy was hands down one of the best young corners in the NFL and looked to be the next star at the position before the injuries. Ever since, he just hasn't quite been the force he was.
But he was injured young and sometimes that bodes well for guys to decline slightly a couple years and then bounce back with a major resurgence. He's definitely worth a look.

He tore his ACL which takes approximately 2 years to fully recover. Having watched the Texans alot, he seemed to have gotten his mojo back. He should be fine next year.

Cowboys don't need him, but he'll definitely be a good pickup by whoever he signs with.

I thought it was the ACL, but didn't his hamstring get torn up as well?

ACL first. I think the hamstring injuries came about in the rehab process.

He's been relatively healthy since coming back.

For some reason I had it in my head that the hamstring had detached from the bone - but that might have been another player...

My bad, you're right. Yes his hammy was ripped at the same time his ACL was torn. But again, that was two years ago.

He's fine now.

There was a time when I wanted Dunta Robinson more than any player in the league.

I heard on Houston AM radio today that Robinson could start for every team in the league. I called the station to put the doofus talking head in his place, but the screener would not let me on.

Legit question though...is Newman > Robinson at this point in their careers?

Dunta Robinson would look nice in a Jets uniform opposite Revis.

he did worse than just the ACL he detached his whole hamstring and everything their where concerns he would never play again and he is not that good of a CB newman is a better CB he is solid but not great. I will pass

He's apparently a "locker room leader." I think the Commanders will make a play for him because they don't seem to like Rogers. I'd prefer just to sign Rogers to a deal.

He's probably better than Scandrick but he'll go where he can start as it should be. He's a good CB. I wouldn't want to see him in Washington.
