Dunta Robinson shouldn't last long on the market
Texans will let top CB test the free agent market. Matt Bowen
It is normal for the NFL Combine to take center stage during the last week of February, pushing the veteran players to the side for a brief period of time.
But, with free agency kicking off on March 5 and names starting to become available, expect the talk to heat up in the hotel lobbies of Indianapolis this week when it comes to the top-tier free agents of the NFL.
And, according to reports, Houston’s Dunta Robinson will be one of those names after the Texans decided not to franchise their top cornerback.
Letting Robinson hit free agency could cost this Texans defense. He is a top-level man-to-man corner who can play press coverage. We talk about that all of the time when it comes to cornerback play in the NFL, but there are really only a few names — big names — who can consistently play man coverage from a press position, which is the hardest thing to do at this level.
You would think that the Texans would be wise to place the franchise tag on Robinson and spend the rest of the spring working on a deal that would lock him up for the next five or six years in a Texans uniform. And, I can’t imagine not hearing his name now floating around on the streets on Indy this week — because players like this don’t come around often.
Earlier this week, the NFP’s Joe Fortenbaugh listed four teams who could be a potential landing spot for Robinson in the case that these reports started to surface: Minnesota, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Baltimore.
Could you envision Robinson in Dick LeBeau’s scheme in Pittsburgh? How about in Minnesota? The possibilities and speculation will soon begin, but more importantly, if you are a Texans fan, do you really want to see this guy go?
Yes, he is going to be a high-priced player — always a risk when you pay out a monster contract at this level. But the Texans don’t need to lose skill players and playmakers on their defense right now. You need corners to beat Indy and you need playmakers to beat the Titans when it comes to the AFC South.
But, just like Julius Peppers of the Panthers, Robinson will be in high demand come March, because he’s too good of a player to pass up.
