DUSTIN LONG, senior quarterback from Groves who led Sam Houston State to the 2004 Southland Conference championship, has been named the SLC's "Player of the Year."

Long and 15 other Sam Houston State players were named All-Southland Conference.

The Southland's leader in passing and total offense all season, Long ranks third in the nation in NCAA Division I-AA football with 3,408 yards passing and is second nationally in touchdown passes with 31. He has led SHSU to the No. 2 national ranking in passing offense with 346.9 yards per game, along
with a No. 4-showing in total offense at 475.7 yards an outing and seventh in scoring offense at 37.8 points.

Long, a senior quarterback, has made the most of his lone season with the Bearkats as he guided them to their second championship in four years and
third Southland title in school history. He leads his team into the NCAA I-AA playoffs this weekend.

A finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which recognizes the top offensive
player in I-AA football, Long has guided SHSU to a 9-2 record a year after
the Bearkats finished 2-9. For the year, he has completed 229-of-373 passes
for a 61.4 completion percentage. His yardage mark is the second-best single-season total in SLC history and his 3,438 yards of total offense also rank second.

Long is joined on the first-team All-SLC offensive unit by six teammates.
Included are receivers Jarrod Fuller and Jason Mathenia and tight end Corey
Roberts. Offensive linemen Steve Izevbizua and Chris Louvier have also
earned top billing. Kicker Lance Garner is the seventh Bearkat on the
offensive top squad.

Fuller, a senior from Jacksonville, Texas, ranks 10th nationally with 6.7
catches per game and is ninth with his 101.0 yards receiving a contest. Both
marks lead the Southland and his 74 catches heading into the postseason is
the fourth-best season total
in SLC history. His 1,111 yards receiving ranks
as the fifth-best total in league history.

Mathenia, a junior from Copperas Cove, Texas, has caught 51 passes for 985
yards and leads the league with 11 touchdown receptions and a 19.3
yard-per-catch average.

Roberts, Izevbizua and Louvier are part of a line which has allowed just six
sacks in an offense that has attempted 404 passes. In addition to his
blocking assignments, Roberts, a junior from Carthage, Texas, has caught 16
passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns. Izevbizua is a repeat first-team
selection who is in his senior season out of Houston, Texas. Louvier is a
three-year letterman for the Bearkats out of Dayton, Texas.

Kicker Lance Garner, a junior from Copperas Cove, finds himself on the first
team after leading the league in scoring with 83 points on the year. He has
hit 13-of-18 field goals and all 44 of his extra-point attempts this season.

SHSU has two players on the defensive first team with Mark Hughes at
cornerback and Paul Donelson at safety. Hughes is tied with Pittman for
league leadership with five interceptions and is tied for fifth with nine
passes defended. Donelson ranks fifth in the SLC with 70 total tackles.

Running back Jason Godfrey, defensive lineman Steven Hagler, and linebacker Marcus Mikulic were second team All-Southland Conference selections.

Wide receiver Vincent Cartwright, defensive lineman John Griffin, safety Braylon Linnear, and return specialist Bernard Campbell were named Honorable Mention All-Southland.
