IRVING, Texas -- If Tony Romo does not play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, Dustin Vaughan will be the Dallas Cowboys’ backup quarterback.

A year ago he was playing at West Texas A&M, throwing 45 touchdown passes.

“I think it just becomes more real,” Vaughan said. “I don’t think it adds any type of nervousness or anxiety, because I think every single week you’re preparing for it. With that, I think just being able to handle it when it comes down to it, and you know hopefully Brandon [Weeden] goes through and has a great game, but my job is to be ready if that time comes.”

Vaughan has taken the scout-team snaps this week after taking only a few reps in the first eight weeks of the season. He has been inactive every game but the Cowboys liked what he showed in the preseason, when he completed 22 of 43 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown.

“He’s done a nice job with that,” passing game coordinator Scott Linehan said of Vaughan’s practice work. “I think it’s really prepared him to step in there. We played him purposely a lot in the preseason with the idea that he was going to need those on the field reps too. For a young guy he’s got a lot of reps behind him in our offense.”

I found this quote interesting, sounds like he is not expecting Tony to play Sunday: “I think it’ll be good, because regular-season games obviously are different in anticipation more than what preseason games are,” Vaughan said. “So I think it’ll be good for me to just be in the game and kind of feel it without actually playing necessarily right away and hopefully Brandon is able to make it through the game no problem. But it’s my job to be prepared and dressed out and ready to go if something does happen.”

Re: Vaughan, I find him an interesting player who could be the future. He was the only QB last year to throw over 5,000 yards at any college level, and has a cannon for an arm. He is a big guy who can take a hit, and shows a lot of poise.

I liked his poise and he seems to be accurate, hopefully he'll pan out to be something.

It's so easy to get excited about the developmental backup QB, but I have to admit, I like the guy's personality, and he's got the physical tools, too. So much of the game is mental, and so much of the mental is dependent on him getting the reps. It'd be amazing, though, if they guy could develop into a player. The team must think he's got at least an outside shot of it to carry him on this roster with so much DL drama going on the whole time.

I think it must be higher than that. Outside shot would mean trying to slip Matt Moore onto your PS. Keeping a guy on the 53 means you think there'd only be an outside shot of him sticking around.

I remember all the positive talk during preseason. Wouldn't it be nice if Romo's replacement were already on the team?

Found a nice tidbit here from Gil Brandt:

Dallas Cowboys QB Dustin Vaughan (West Texas A&M)
Vaughan was a prolific passer in college. He was the only quarterback in the NCAA last year to pass for more than 5,000 yards, setting a Division II record in the process. He has good size, accuracy and intelligence. His hand size (8 7/8 inches) is less than ideal. I watched him warm up last week before the New York Giants game with Troy Aikman, and Troy was impressed with how he could spin the ball. He obviously has done enough to impress the Cowboys, who didn't want to expose him on the practice squad so they elevated him to the 53-man roster -- the first time Dallas has kept three QBs on the roster since 2011.
