What's the most efficient way to make that work? What equipment do I need? etc. etc.

I've only recently gotten a DVR and I have a couple of movies that I want to rip from there.

The easiest way is to get a stand alone DVD player/recorder and pass the DVR output through the DVD recorder input. I did this for several years with a cheap $100 DVD recorder.

Yeah, what he said.

I have a DVD recorder that cost me about $100 and I have it hooked directly up to my DVR and just record as I watch the show. Makes it easy to edit out commericals too.

If you record programs to the DVR in HD can you burn them to a DVD?

Any recommendations on DVD recorders? Too lazy to do any actual research on it.

I currently have a Sony (don't know the model number off the top of my head) and I really enjoy it and have had no issues with it.

Yep, but it depends on your DVR and/or how bad you want the programs in HD. You'll run into shows that are flagged copy once and maybe copy never.

For that, you should go to http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=42. If your DVR has been discussed there, av nerds have already looked at how to rip content from it.

There's also a forum for DVD recorders there too: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=106

Thanks guys. That's what I needed to know. Maybe I'll be able to catch one on sale during cyber monday.

I've never had a problem with that... in terms of copyright protection or whatever. The way I have my system set up, the DVR would never know that the program it's playing is being recorded by the DVDR. It's just sending it's signal out and the DVDR is writing it to a disc.

If you're talking about quality, it's simply a matter of setting your DVDR to it's highest quality setting. I'm not sure what that equates to in terms of 1080 or 720, but it's a good picture.

I just got U-Verse installed yesterday, I too will be looking into how to do this.
