Dwayne Jarrett WR USC

STRENGTHS
Dwayne has the size, speed, hands and route running ability that is equal to any WR in this draft. He is mature on the football field in his play beyond his years. Dwayne has those long legs that make it easy for him to separate from the CB’s. His speed is deceiving and it would not surprise me to find out that he is as fast as Roy Williams WR Detroit Lions. In fact, he has that same type of long lopping stride that Williams has – yes, the one that makes it very difficult for CB’s to stay with him. There is no doubt about Dwayne’s talent to be successful at the next level.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE
There is an old saying, “ Sometimes, you’re too smart for your own good”. Dwayne has first round talent, but doesn’t give first round effort on every play. He gives a halfhearted effort when he blocks and runs routes. He is a great fantasy league player. By that, I mean he’ll get big stats as his team loses.

TALENT BOARD ROUND: 2
Ask yourself this -– with this kid’s talent along with Booty at QB, why doesn’t USC go down the field more often? Why has the USC offense become less vertical this year? Stop, stop, stop! You’re hurting my head with all those lame answers. It is not because they don’t have Bush or White. It is because Booty cannot trust Jarrett and has to come off of him too quickly and go to Steve Smith instead. It’s that simple. Now when the Bowl games come up you will see Dwayne play one of his best games of the season. That’s because he has first round talent; unfortunately, that first round talent is married to a third round heart. Dwayne must be worried that he will get injured or maybe there is a number of other excuses, but the fact is, he is a fantasy player. He is not a winner. He needs to be surrounded by winners, but he is not the type of WR you make your #1 and base your whole team’s passing game on. He reminds me a lot of Roy Williams WR Lions. Both players are extremely talented players that lack the true toughness and heart to be a franchise WR. Maybe they both will develop into that type of WR, but for me, to draft players like that in the first round just because they have talent is the recipe for a first round pick never living up to expectations. Is that what the first round is all about? Drafting players that you know will not live up to expectations? Dwayne will be picked in the first round if he comes out. And he will have very good stats; however, unless you pair him up with a WR who is smart, tough and a good route runner that will do anything to win - then all Dwayne’s game will ever be is smoke and mirrors. I would pick the Dwayne from LSU way before I would pick this kid. But he does look pretty when he takes the field! In fact, he plays like he doesn’t want to mess himself up. He will do well in a dome and on turf, but if I’m a cold weather team with a grass field, I’m looking for a totally different kind of WR -- one who doesn’t mind getting messed up and will show up to play for all the games -- not just the ones he thinks are important.

- Drew Boylhart (thehuddlereport.com)

So you're saying he's Roy Williams, ehh?

Sign me up... Williams was the 7th pick overall in '04, and just got done with his first Pro Bowl.

On second thought, if DREW BOYLHART says he has no heart, I guess I gotta believe him:rolleyes:

You do not want to take a chance with a high pick on a player that NEEDS motivation.

He really reminds me of Keyshawn Johnson. Johnson is a pretty darn good player, so it's not really an insult. However, having Johnson robs your team of a bit of its explosiveness. Look at the difference having TO has on the team.

Still, the guy has been amazingly productive - that's impossible to argue. I think I still would rate the WRs (for us) as Meachem/Bowe, Rice, Jarrett, Ginn. Really, I don't want Ginn at all.

I seem to remember Jarrett having a good game against Texas last year and also against the Okies as a true freshmen. I think its funny that a player actually comes up big in bowl games and gets a character assasination piece written against him while certain college players havent played well in a big game in their lives and are praised as leaders of men.

Don't be ridiculous.

Noone praised Peyton Manning as a leader of anything, except the meat-cutters union.

I have been saying this all offseason, Jarrett is the guy I want in the draft!

He uses his body well, catches the ball with his hands, hardly ever drops a pass, protects the QB by keeping the defender away from the ball, runs his routes well, finds ways to get open but catches it anyway when he is covered, has the size and jumping ability to catch high passes, and has "deceptive" speed in that he doesn't appear to be that fast but once he gets going you can't catch him.

This guy will be a star in the NFL and I hope it is while he is wearing one on his helmet. :star:
you could match that scouting report w/ Dwayne Bowe, and you would have the same receiver

I like Robert Meachem because only him and Calvin Johson have that big body and are home-run threats every time they touch the football, the man averaged 18 yards a catch on 71 receptions for crying out loud

No crap.

I DO NOT want to take Jarrett at #22 and even I think that was a hatchet job by Drew Boylhart (whoever the hell that is).

Drew Boylhart writes for the Huddle Report. His thing is that he only writes about players he's scouted and seen. If he hasn't seen them, he tells you right up front that he has never seen the player etc. The Huddle Report, for those who may not know it, is one of the most accurate of all the services going right now. They pick at about 85%. I believe that only Gosselin picks with better accuracy at about 87% but Gosselin, as I understand it, gets his stuff straight from sources within the teams as opposed to player evaluations, per say. If boylhart is saying it, there's probably a very good chance there's something to it. JMO.

Did you happen to see him against Michigan and the top rated CB in the draft?

How about watching the player......I watch the highlights and block the opponents out of my mind and hone in entirely on the player.

Jarrett has done some big league things....he's money.

The huddle report as a whole may be up there, but Boylhart is in the bottom five guys who have been graded on mock drafts for the past 3 years. 21st out of 25.

That's fair, but still, Boylhart is a guy who only reports what he has seen or knows. He will not fluff a piece just to do it. Hey may not be 100% in his evaluations but he generally doesn't report something unless there is some sort of substance to it.

You obviously know more about him than I do... I just heard of him today. But when it comes to something as subjective as heart, opinions will differ. Hell, he could have talked to Jarrett one time and come to that opinion. How else could he get that kind of info? I KNOW Pete Carroll wouldn't say that... some former USC coach? Some current USC coach?

All I'm saying is, tell us how you come to that conclusion, rather than state it in your hatchet job of a scouting report, and allude to him "not wanting to get his uniform dirty." None of his opinions are backed up with examples... it's just a feeling he gets.

Maybe he's a laid back guy, maybe he's depressed. Who knows? Nothing wrong with wanting to know HOW he came to his conclusion, especially if he's going to be that virulent in his opinion.

I agree, it is his opinion of this player. However, to fair, there are other publications that elude to the same kinds of opinions. Much of this steams from his past. He has not been the hardest worker while at USC. Does that carry over to the NFL? I don't know but it's certainly a concern you need to evaluate. Not everybody sees this player as a sure fire game breaking type WR in the NFL. For example, here is what Rob Rang thought of him from Draft Scout.

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 219 | 40-Time: 4.60

Official Bio

Strengths:
Terrific size...Long arms...Athletic and agile...Fantastic ball skills...Excellent body control...A great leaper who will go up and catch the ball at its highest point...Has big, soft hands...Will make the tough catch in traffic...Tracks the ball well over his shoulder...A terror in the redzone...A solid blocker...Runs well after the catch...Has always been clutch in big situations...Was extremely productive his entire career.

Weaknesses:
Does not have the timed speed you look for...Needs to get stronger and be more physical...Does not get much separation...Won't run away from anyone and isn't a deep / vertical threat...Dealt with some injuries in college...Has minor character concerns...May profile as more of a #2 target at the next level and not a true #1.

Notes:
His cousin, Desmond Belton, is a junior wide receiver at Idaho...He will draw the inevitable comparisons to former Trojan Mike Williams and even though they are somewhat similar that isn't fair...Highly decorated college star whose production was second to none...Has almost everything you look for other than speed and how fast he runs in workouts will be the key to how high he is ultimately drafted.

Thats how I feel. I could care less about the scouting report. Everygame I have seen him in he was lights out. But, as I said, I am not a scout or a coach, so I just go off of what I see. I dont understand where this stuff about motivation problems came from. Maybe an USC fan can shed some light.
