According to Todd Archer from the Dallas Morning News the Cowboys could be in line for Dwight Freeney.

Top three:

:starspin 1. Dwight Freeney, Indianapolis: The Colts finally have to spend big-time money on defense to keep sack specialist.
2. Cory Redding, Detroit: Picked the right time to have his best season with eight sacks.
3. Juqua Thomas, Philadelphia: Can be a hybrid between end and outside LB.
Of the Chargers' league-high 61 sacks last year, 42.5 came from linebackers. The Cowboys got 20.5 sacks from their linebackers in 2006.

DeMarcus Ware had 11.5 sacks in 2006 and made his first Pro Bowl. Under Wade Phillips, Ware will be put in more positions to rush the passer, just as San Diego's Shawne Merriman was. Greg Ellis is coming off Achilles' tendon surgery and remains the team's next best pass rush threat.

Having spent big money on linebackers and defensive line in the draft and free agency, the Cowboys might be reluctant to go after a top-end rusher such as Indianapolis' Dwight Freeney, preferring to hope for improvement from within.

I believe they call this a "pipe dream". Thanks for getting my hopes up with a provocative title on President's Day only to have them dashed after opening this thread.

I give this one an 8 on the stupid rumor meter.

I read this article a couple of days ago. Archer wasn't saying Dallas was in line to get Freeny... he was merely listing the top guys at each position.

Heck, Archer even states that Dallas might prefer to get improvement from within.

No way Freeny leaves Indy.

HUH?

You say that Archer is suggesting it is possible.

But then you quote from Archer who says that duet to the money, the team is probably reluctant to go after Freeney would prefer to improve from within.

Where the heck are you getting any indication we are interested in him?

"OMG, the Mavs might bring in Chris Webber! See what the paper says: 'Chris Webber is a free agent but the Mavs are not interested in him.'"

Reading is fundamental.

We can't afford to sign Freeney and I'd be stunned if Colts stupid enough to let him go. If they can't work out a contract with him then they will franchise him and demand 2 first round picks.

We need get real here. We are $20M under the cap with a little more when we cut Bledsoe. Threw in Riveria and probably Fabini and we might still have another $1M or so. We've still got to sign Gurode, Colombo, Crayton & hopefully Gramatica and offer good tenders to Ratliff, etc. Our first priority must be to upgrade our RG position and sign our own players. It is not to go after high priced FA players and drive up the price with other teams who have between $30-$40M cap available. We don't need turn into another Washington and overpay other teams' FAs.

Freeney sure picked a bad time to have a below average season.

I doubt this year will have much bearing on his value. Guys who are proven pass rushers in this league demand a high salary. That's just how it goes. He's had 10+ sacks in 3 of his 4 seasons, and seriously stepped his game up in the playoffs.

IF he hits the market, which I doubt Indy let's happen, he will command HUGE money.

If somehow we were to land Freeney, I would call Jerry Houdini, and proclaim him the greatest owner in the History of owners.

Even if the Colts decided they wanted to trade him i'd give them our 1st round pick for Freeney.

I would give them my 1st and 2nd rounders, and throw in Ellis.

What ever we pick in the first round will never be as good as Freeney -- our second round picks have sucked the past few years, and we don't need a bunch of players anymore, we just need a few quality players.

I agree. Someone that draws as much attention as Freeney does opposite of Ware would be scarry.

1st and 2nd seems like a lot to give up but in the end it would probably be worth it.

Ware and Freeney on the field at the same time would be incredible.

Hey, I could get a guard and corner in free agency.

If we get a 1st round player at where we're picking, he's not going to be nearly as good as Freeney.

Our 2nd round player would probably be someone who would not start for a couple of years.

We can still draft in the third, or use next years 1st to move back up in the draft as early as the 2nd if we see a no brainer. My purpose is, we don't need a ton of players anymore, honestly.
With Ware and Freeney coming off those edges, you can play my fat arse at corner, and i'll get 5 interceptions by default.

Dwight Freeney to be a Cowboy?

Colts put franchise tag on DE Freeney

February 19, 2007

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The Indianapolis Colts made defensive end Dwight Freeney their franchise player on Monday, keeping him with the Super Bowl champions for at least one more season while they work on a long-term contract.

Freeney, a first-round draft pick in 2002, missed the Pro Bowl this year for the first time since his rookie season. He was held to a career-low 5 1/2 sacks while fighting shoulder and leg injuries.

Still, the Colts were not going to let him get away.

"He wasn't going to go anywhere," team president Bill Polian said. "There's no timeline, but we're still talking (to his agent) with the idea of putting together a longer deal. He's a key part of our team."

Freeney would have become an unrestricted free agent March 2 without a new contract. The franchise tag means the Colts could keep him by matching any offer sheet he might sign with another team. If they chose not to match it, the Colts would get the other team's first-round draft picks in 2007 and 2008 as compensation. He's guaranteed $8,644,000, the average salary of the top five defensive ends next season.
