The open field is when there are no more defenders directly in-between the ball carrier and the endzone. That's when all ball carriers run upright. The ducking and lowering of pads occur when defenders are close or closing in. So, it depends on the amount of traffic, surrounding the ball carrier. Emmitt was a great in traffic, congested runner. That's what made him special.Emmitt's head was always forward, even in the open field. I don't recall ever seeing him run straight upright like that. It's possible that I'm misremembering, but I don't think so.
