E.J. Whitley is a versitile lineman out of Texas City, Texas (Texas City HS), where he was a pre-season All-American. He also earned first team all-state and all-district honors as a defensive lineman on his way to a state championship. After redshirting his first season, he became an intergral part of the Red Raiders' offensive line. He has proven to be a durable player, having started 45 games in his career at Texas Tech, which is the most among current lineman at Tech. E.J. has started at every position along the line, and he has provided leadership and experience for the unit.

Whitley is one of the most versitile offensive lineman in America. He is somewhat slight to play tackle in the NFL, but he has the frame, wingspan, and experience to provide depth at the position. He has ideal size for a guard or center, and has experience playing both. He has very good feet for a player his size, having been converted from the defensive side of the ball. He can quickly establish position on the edges, moving his feet to stay infront of pass rushing defensive ends. He is tenacious on the interior as well, showing solid effort to stay with blocks. The Tech offense is built on short drops by the quarterback, so lineman aren't asked to stay with their blocks for long periods of time in pass protection. The Red Raiders don't run conventional running plays, so his run blocking will need some polish and refining. He isn't as strong or dominate as his size would suggest.

2006 NFL Draft Outlook

His versitility will be his best asset on draft day. Whitley will need to have a good showing on the bench press, and demonstrate good playing strength to maximize his draft status. He projects more as a guard with his size and acceleration, and could be drafted as high as the third round.
