E. L. Vela's "Face of the Franchise" series Part II: Jason Witten Painting

Well Zone, I finally finished the follow-up to my Demarcus Ware painting. I originally wanted to create an offensive/defensive player of the decade for our Cowboys but I recently had the urge to veer off-course. I decided to do a series entitled "Face of the Franchise."

The goal was to pick a representative for each of the 32 NFL franchises. This would be the athlete that, over the past decade, would be on the tip of the casual fan's tongue when asked who jumps out when they thought a specific team.

Now I know that the casual fan would most likely pick Tony Romo to represent all the Cowboys stand for. He is that flashy, charismatic, gunslinging, celebrity quarterback that just screams out Big D. Let's face it, when the average fan thinks Cowboys, they think STARS.

But I'm not the average fan and I can cheat on my own art series if I want to, so when I think Dallas Cowboys in the past decade, I think blue collar work ethic; I think class and character; I think Jason Witten. Sure the Cowboys will always be about Glitz and Glamor but there is room inside the big top for a, steady, reliable grunt like Witten.

So here's to you Mr. Witten...may you always be the security blanket to our Linus...(full disclosure, I'm actually a HUGE Romo supporter - I'll never forget the lame joke we were regarded as before he showed up, so to pick Witt over Romo tells you how much I deeply respect him.)

And a close-up, for the ladies?

I'll be moving from team to team doing work for all franchises, though something is telling me that three teams may remain faceless (Unless someone can think of an athlete when playing word association, Commanders edition - that was wrong and I apologize slightly)

Absolutely nothing against Witten, as I love him. But Romo IS the face ofour team. No big deal though, Witten is a great player and you did a great job with this piece of work. Congrats.

I know what you mean, it was hard to do that to Romo, but I went with my gut...sometimes the gut makes no sense :)

This is a GREAT piece.

Is it for sale?

Absolutely Coach though not the original as I'd like to build strength for a gallery spot. Prints are available at my site if you click my signature link bellow-ish.

I was thinking...maybe the reason I chose Witten over Romo is because I subconsciously felt that the image of Romo as a "celebrity QB" is unfair. Romo has always been first and foremost about hard work and dedication, just like Witten. It's not his fault he's been painted with the wrong brush by the media. So in a sense, voting Romo would have been voting in favor of misguided perception as opposed to reality. As a Cowboys fan, I felt qualified to make that judgement call. (that just about covers that mess up :p)

That pictures generous in the hair department

I was going to say... Looks like he got Kurt Warner's hair. ;)

Nice job, though. I can't draw a stick figure.

Wow dude, awesome job!

I love the Drew Brees one, by the way. That is a great piece. And I don't even like the Saints.

Thanks y'all (does anyone say that anymore?) Looks like an even split between the yay and "looks like *insert anyone but Witten*" vote.

I did feel dirty painting another team's QB fondling our trophy like that...but you've got to admit, if not us, then that fine city (and the team we humbled)deserved it. We've got dibs this year.
