Eagles' Heckert likely to be named Browns next general manager 1/9/2010 10:05:33 AM

NFL.com reports Philadelphia Eagles GM Tom Heckert is likely to be named the Cleveland Browns’ new GM, league sources have told NFL Network's Michael Lombardi. An announcement is expected Monday.

Heckert, who has served as the GM of the Eagles since 2006, interviewed with Holmgren on Wednesday.

The Browns, who have not had a GM since George Kokinis was fired in November, will not conduct any interviews over the weekend, spokesman Neal Gulkis said.

Heckert, whose father, Tom, worked as a scout for the Browns in the 1980s, could be hired once the Eagles complete their season. They play the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC playoffs on Saturday. Heckert reportedly was going to interview for Seattle's GM job this week but backed out.

I'm not aware of the specifics regarding team executives taking new jobs that have the same title, but if my memory serves me correctly, a team has the ability to "block" such a hire if it involves a member of the coaching staff.

If anyone could shed some light on this particular angle of the hiring process, I would be much obliged.

Andy Reid and Joe Banner have already given him their blessing.

Can GM's be stolen away without compensation? Maybe his contract was up? Just curious.

Added: Sorry Pabst, didn't see your post re same.
