Eagles release CB Darius Slay

The Eagles do have some cap issues....they have $22m in space and cutting Slay will add around 4.5m but won't come until June when you are picking off the scrap heap.

They don't have much room to restructure because they take the opposite approach that we do.

For free agents they have Zack Baun, Mekhi Becton, Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, Isaiah Rodgers, and Avonte Maddox. They only have Dean at LB so Baun is almost a must resign. They have a great OL coach and system, so they likely will let Becton walk. You would think they would want to resign either Williams or Sweat. Losing two of them would be a big loss. Rodgers and Maddox were their 4th and 5th corners so with Slay getting cut they need a starter and depth.

Spotrac and OverTheCap give their predictions...from figures talked about in the media it seems Spotrac is closer to reality in regard to values although there are some discrepancies. Most of the free agent predictions have Osa and Milton Williams rated very close to each other, but Spotrac predicts $21m average for Osa and only $12m for Williams. I just can't believe there will be that much difference in their deals...overall their career stats are pretty close. Spotrac has Baun at 10m per year, which also seems low compared to other LBs. Sweat is listed at 19m a year.

Adding their rookie pool will take some of their cap, and say they resign Baun, Williams or Sweat, and Rodgers. That is going to put them near the cap before June 1st when they get the minimal savings from Slay's deal. It seems like they are going to have a hard time doing much outside of signing some of their own.

They won't re-sign Williams, Sweat or Becton. Maddox doesn't command $1 million salary. The rest they'll still try to keep. They have to clear out roster space for draft picks. I'm sure they would love to keep Baun but not much more beyond that. Middle-of-the-road players is not what enamored them. Big star players do.

Aren't you the guy that said Tyron is going to stuff Garrett if the Eagles get him and that he is over the hill? Your opinion is worthless.

Maddox minimum as a vet free agent is over a million. LOL.

Won’t work.

They have a ticking time bomb with their cap.
Yes, they do, and it is unavoidable. Yet, the still need to get under the CAP when the time comes so Roseman has to minimize the impact. As expected, he will have to dump contracts like Slay's. But the point is he has a plan to do it while finding the talent to backfill for who he cuts. And the Eagles have been through this before. What it boils down to is talent evaluation. I still think they are going to trade Hurts at some point.

Anime in this board? Wow we are indeed changing.

Anyway, slay can be a good option.

Roseman built the bomb. The goal is to win Super Bowls AND deal with the financial challenges of staying competitive in the contemporary NFL. I don’t buy into the “genius” moniker, but Howie Roseman does his job. He’s good at it, too.

Despite his age (34), Slay can still offer a contender quality depth on the cheap.

Great situation for PHI and not a totally terrible situation for Slay
Slay has publicly stated that he only wants to play for Philly or Detroit. I think he will be on one of those rosters before training camp opens.

This is the answer to the question of how the Eagles are able to get all these players in free agency with a cap. The answer is, they can't. The cap hits every team and is especially hard on SB participants.

Now, the trap is that teams will sign former champions to inflated contracts believing their team needs a players that "understands what it takes to win."

Yes, their rookies played well last season. Will they be better than if Slay was still with the team? I doubt it. This is a step backwards in talent for their secondary.

I see it more of a realistic understanding the father time is undefeated. They probably bring back Rodgers and don’t miss a beat… if not, Rodgers they have that Georgia boy Ringo…. I actually really wish they were bringing Slay back… so they would waste money on a deteriorating asset.

Yes yes that's me! :)

I'm glad you remembered. Tyron would stone him. LOL!

Now on a serious note you really got me there. As a vested veteran this year because of the time he's been in the NFL he would be eligible to get 1,210,000. But that's pretty much meaningless. Let's go by last year's salary. The Eagles paid him 2 million. His salary cap hit, was slightly lower at approximately $1.67 million due to how the contract was structured with guarantees and bonuses. Of that only 875,000 was guaranteed. That was contingent on being on the roster for 18 games. It turns out he was on the roster for 18 games, and he collected the full amount they agreed to. Okay??

He was a backup that didn't play much. I would guess if they even kept him his contract would be similar unless someone offered him more elsewhere. So just because he's eligible for 1.2 million doesn't mean that's what the Hit will be. So I'll amend my previous comment. Maddox would cost at least 1.5 million in salary cap money 500,000 more than my original comment.

I hope that's acceptable to you? My personal opinion they won't even keep him because they have to clear out 6 or 7 players for draft picks, and free agents. I removed a lot of my opinion to replace it with facts. I hope you like it :)

They don't have to clear out any room for draft picks with their current salary cap space. Secondly we are talking about 4th and 5th cornerbacks...so you would most likely want guys that are making around $1-2m. Not saying they will keep Maddox, because they probably would keep Rodgers over him, but the minimum salary for a rookie this year will be $840k, so a vet at 1.2m is only adding about $400k. So he basically would be competing against a 5th through 7th round or even an undrafted free agent corner.

It is unlikely they release anyone because the only one that gives any relief over $1m is Cam Juergens and they aren't gonna cut him. There are a few guys that they could make June 1st cuts but that isn't really going to help them in the first rounds of free agency. Same thing with restructuring and extensions, they can't make much room that way.

I think the Eagles will try to sign a couple of their own free agents and maybe try to add one or two outside guys. They were able to get a steal in Barkley and Baun exploded after a mediocre showing prior to this year. Sometimes a player just fits a system....that is the case there.

Signed Barkley to an extension, according to OverTheCap it will save 1.3m on next year's cap.

This would be a GREAT pickup (Slay) for the Cowboys so it wont happen.
