Interesting observations from Day 2 of training camp for the Oline:
  • Josh Ball is working as the starting Right Guard with Zack Martin missing camp - and he's getting beat a lot...still.
  • Chuma Edoga, who many thought would be working at guard, is actually working at back-up Right Tackle. He's getting some 1st team reps.
  • Matt Waletzko seems to be working exclusively at Left Tackle behind Tyron Smith
  • Undrafted free agent TJ Bass looking good at backup Left Guard
  • Cowboys backup Center Alec Lindstrom is the younger brother of Atlanta Falcons Guard Chris Lindstrom, who just became the highest paid Offensive Guard in the NFL at $21M per year, which might be why Zack Martin wants to renegotiate his deal
  • Last year's 1st round pick, Tyler Smith, is absolutely stoning this year's 1st round pick Mazi Smith on the plays

I've been saying all along, either move Tyler Smith to Right Guard (Cowboys are not doing it in order not to upset Zack Martin) or plug in Matt Farniok at Right Guard. Josh Ball has no business starting in Zack Martin's absence. Matt Farniok would do a much better job if Tyler Smith is not going to get moved to substitute for Zack. Cowboys know if they move Tyler Smith to Right Guard, he would most likely play so well, everyone would see how good Tyler Smith would do at Right Guard, thus it would cause some to question why pay Zack Martin even more to play when Tyler Smith is doing such a good job.

Mazi getting schooled early on. Welcome to the NFL rookie.

Geez….it’s not like these are the starters. Barring injury, we all know the starting OL is
Tyron - Tyler - Biadasz - Martin - Steele.

In Martin’s absence, Ball is getting a chance at his guard spot, but it’s very likely that he will be cut this year as a vet who has shown nothing. He is clearly not in the plans at OT. WallyWorld will be the swing tackle. Bassfisherman is likely a guard. Chewy of Star Wars will likely be a guy who can play guard or tackle in a pinch.

Yeah Chuma getting reps at tackle but I think that’s to see what he can do there. He’s our guard but if Tyron gets hurt I guess they’ll have the option of him playing there and leaving Smith at guard.

Which is why rookies cannot be counted on to make a big impact. The same is true for everyone's rookies no matter where they were drafted.
It's more true for Mazi because he's never going to do anything other than get stoned early in his career. His entire job is to do that.

You use a first on him hoping that he can develop into a passrusher, but that was never going to happen early.

I do not understand how you can stone a guy who's job is to clog up the middle.

Unless Tyler is moving him out of a runner's path he is doing his job.

He is not a rush guy yet.

Where the coaches are lining people up is a very interesting topic.
But....talking about who is stoning who is silly. No pads yet, fellas!!! It's line play!! How do can you judge lineplay on day 2 of training camp, with no pads??

It gives us a chance to evaluate Ball. We know he was bad at tackle. So maybe he might be good backup guard. He is not looking good there neither. So maybe cut bait

Its kind of the other way around. Mazi's job is presumably to stone the OL and clog the middle, allowing the LBers to roam free and make plays. If Tyler and Mazi are both holding their ground, I'd say Mazi is doing his job..

Edoga not getting looks at guard is really odd to me.

Yeah, but I kind of thought Farniok was McGoverns replacement anyway. Last year the staff had them about the same, supposedly. Was Edoga brought in for depth, with the FO not having starting aspirations?
