Early Favorites in Round 1

Yeah Mayer isn’t going to blow up the combine, but he’s just a really good football player. He does everything extremely well from finding space in the D, catching, to blocking. He reminds me a good bit of TJ Hockenson when he was coming out of Iowa. Hockensin ran a 4.7 40 and a lot people questioned if hed be worthy of a top pick. Mayer isn’t going to be a Kelce, Waller or Pitts type of TE, but I think Hockenson is well within the realm of possibility. Hard to compare a prospect to a HOF’er, but Witten is also an easy/lazy comparison for Mayer

I know college #’s aren’t everything, but back to back seasons with 65+ catches, 800+ yards, and 7+ TD’s is extremely impressive and hard to ignore.

1. Carter
2. Anderson
3. Wilson
4. Murphy
5. Skoronski
6. Johnson
7. Porter Jr
8. Branch
9. Van Ness
10. B. Jones
11. Addison
12. Mayer
13. A. Harrison
14. K. White
15. Witherspoon

That would be my 15. If none available at 26 then do your best to trade back.
Mayer is Witten 2.0

Dane's top 6: Gonzalez, Porter Jr, Witherspoon, Cam Smith, Banks and Ringo.

We all agree there is separation after the top 3, but the 2nd tier is still good. At 58, we probably will see a steep decline in talent at the position.
I like DJ Turner and Forbes more than Smith and Banks. That's just me though.

Like Turner, but fear Quinn won’t due to lack of length. Forbes is very similar to Diggs both the good and the bad, probably can’t have two who hate to tackle, although they would get a ton of turnovers

I read Forbes isn't scared to tackle.

Cam Smith is undersized. As is banks. Ringo isn't that good to me but he's athletic and big. He would be a Byron jones type. It wouldn't be the worst pick if Quinn can pull something out of him
Cam is 6’0 and Banks is 6’2.

Yes, I watched him this morning, reminds me of Darrishaw, who has been a good LT for the Vikings. Not as physical as Broderick, but looks like an elite pass protector. If either are there, they will be the pick.

As for Ringo, he has those physical traits that our front office and Quinn love. I agree, the team who drafts him are taking him for his upside, not his college production. You know how this team covets elite athletes with great length. That alone, we need to consider him a Cowboy pick.
Yea I like the comp. Darrishaw took a year or so to get stronger but he’s turned into a stud LT IMO.

Man with so many great CBs in this class I’d be disappointed with Ringo at 26. Especially if it’s over one of the other dudes I mentioned.

offense:
michael mayer,te-notre dame
broderick jones,ot-geotgia

One of my favorite players in this draft is Clark Phillips from Utah. He does everything you want out of a corner, is tough as hell, is insanely competitive and combative, has tons of twitch, and is very much a ball hawk. He is a dog on the field and the kind of guy WR’s hate to play against.

However, he is just 5’10”. With Quinn and McClay, that might just make him not-eligible. But, that only makes him a little bit shorter than Kelvin Joseph, except that Phillips is everything that Joseph is not. He is a great corner.

Phillips, a Junior, originally committed to Ohio State before deciding on Utah and switching. He has been a starter since game 1 of his freshmen year, starting all 31 games while in college. In those 31 games, he had 9 interceptions, with 4 of them being pick-6’s. This season he was voted the PAC 12 defensive player of the year.

He is an alpha dog, and his click-and-close is amazingly fast. He is twitchy as hell. He changes directions so quick that QB’s can misjudge distances with him.

What I love most about him is his mental makeup. Doing anything against Phillips is difficult. He just makes everything hard for WR’s. I wrote at the start of this post that he is competitive and combative… and that is just what he is. He’s always fighting, scratching and clawing to get to the ball, and he has maybe the best ball awareness out of all of this year’s corners. He locates the ball, either knocking it down or picking it off.

He’s just a fantastic CB that I’d love to have in Dallas.

I know that Quinn likes length but I’d much rather have Phillips than Ringo, Smith, and some other first round corners. He is simply a much better football player with much better instincts for the position. If Ringo had Phillips mind and instincts for the position, he’d be going top 5 and be super elite. But he doesn’t. Nobody other than maybe Witherspoon does.

With Quinn having a lot of length in the secondary already, maybe he would go for a little bit shorter, faster corner who has great smarts and instincts. I hope so.

If Phillips runs a fast time at the combine, I’d rather have him than any of the corners except for Witherspoon and Gonzales. He’s just a better player than everyone else, IMO.

Anyway, that is my rant on drafting worse players because they’re two inches taller.

Problem is, it’s not just Quinn, also Will McClay loves lengthy corners. I agree take the best player, not the one who has the best traits that translates

Dude is a stud. He doesn’t fit the typical Cowboys prototype but hopefully he’s on their radar.

i ahve seen a lot of georgia games and that dude gives up huge plays every time.

i think the Tackles and CB’s are going to fly off the board. Terrible WR class. Too many smallish WR’s for my taste. Also a big fan of Phillips. I think he’s 1 of the top 4 CB’s in the class.

Love Phillips. But he likely won’t fit here (my opinion and I’m not a professional scout). But I don’t feel he is as successful in a press man type scheme. I like him much better in a zone scheme. In the film I’ve watched, he has struggled to open his hips.

This reminds me so much of Asante Samuel. Not the player, but the situation. Dallas will pass on the elite talent due to scheme and end up with the lesser player (Joseph over Samuel Jr.).

End of the day though, I love the kid, love the pick. Initially committed to Ohio state and if he played there I promise he would be getting more hype and would go earlier.

There will certainly be bigger CB’s to choose from. Especially is round 1, this team is going to draft someone that checks all the physical boxes.

Jordan Addison would be my one bang-the-table pick. The NFL today is about getting open and throwing a pass within ~2.5 seconds, and nobody separates better in 2 seconds than Addison. Pairing him with CeeDee would make MM's West Coast offense hum, and frankly, I think he is the one rookie who moves the needle on our 2023 Super Bowl odds.

When it's all said and done though, I'll bet he goes top 15. Biletnikoff winner, should have a huge Combine, plays a premium position, declared in a weak draft class... it all points to an early pick.
