Early thoughts

I wasn't real happy yesterday when we didn't trade down.
Knowing we were getting no better than our 4th option at 16 was a bummer.
Very good player but not at all what we were targeting.
Part of the reason I wanted so badly to move down is we do so many of these mocks we see where the "value" seemed to be.

I thought Lawrence fit to us nicely at 26.
Then we would have still had 47, 78 plus whatever we got to move down.

End of the day it is pretty clear we couldn't trade down.
CLE wasn't interested in going up that high apparently.

But it does suck because the OL in R1 meant a near panic trade to find the RDE.

This may work out and we end up with a couple of Pro Bowlers.

But this team needs a lot of depth and tossing away 3rd rounders to move up 13 spots is a tough pill to swallow.

I would have felt a lot better had it been a 3rd in next years draft instead.

I was all defense in the first round but upon reflection Martin appears to be
what Romo's back needs.Those third downs now can be a little easier to make.
The is just no neg's on martin.
Lawrence is the good and bad but we needed him as they felt there was a big drop
after DL.
I'll wait sure the season to play then get my opinion .

I'm Fine with the Martin pick. Much prefer him over Shazier at 16. Really hated giving up our 3rd. Staying put and taking BPA would have most likely landed us a DT at minimum, like a Jernigan. That being said, if Lawrence turns into the player they expect, then it works out I suppose.

Yea its a wait and see attitude with me to on Lawrence but I can tell you right now
I am on board with the Martin pick though I was all about Donald.

I agree with this to some extent. While I did like the Martin pick, I would have also preferred a deal down and picking Lawrence at #26 would have avoided a trade up in the second rd and allowed the team to hold on to the third.
End of the day, Martin is a stud and not having him changes the entire complexion of the Cowboys draft.

Yeah, this puzzles me too. It kinda looked like we were trying to trade down. If we weren't offered a good deal for a trade down, then we need to stay. JJ was railed for his trade down last year. He was fleeced, was what folks were saying.

Fans just assume that you can trade up & down whenever you want... And in addition you can dictate the terms of the transaction.

Or the idea that every other GM is a schnook you are going to be able to fleece. Sometimes you have to make the hard choice to pay a little more than you want, especially if a guy is clearly the best player on your board.

We didn't trade down because we couldn't get fair value, so we turn around and overpay to move up...

Teh J just doesn't really understand how the draft works.

So we don't get fair value but we take what CLE was offering 26+83 and keep our 47+78

or...

Like JJ we pick at 16 and trade our 47+78 for 34...

Would you rather have 26+47+78+83 in a deep draft or 16+34???

Things haven't worked out great for Dallas, for sure. But I don't fault them much for how they responded to those breaks. We needed the DE. But the guy had better be a player because he's two guys rolled up into one from now on.

You do not get to pick and choose your trade details for sure and that is always going to be a challenge.
You also are going to please 100% of the people 0% of the time.

Had we taken the CLE deal this "could" have been the haul before today:

47. Timmy Jernigan
78. Kareem Martin
83, Trai Turner

So basically net sum is Zach Martin for Jernigan/Kareem/Turner

How many of those guys did our scouts have valued like that anyways? Either those scenarios are not being shown to Jerry or we don't have em on our board and so Jerky makes rash moves...

Hey, it's Jerry and his crew, surely everyone knows to expect some level of draftile dysfunction every year. So far I'd say they've managed to stave off disaster, I like the first two guys,,,

Not sure it matters TBH.
We know they brought in all the guys I listed so they had interest.

But overriding point is in deep drafts you win by moving down; not overpaying to move up.
It is frustrating to me because Dallas pulled it off last year and got a huge win out of the deal by dropping for less than value and then even with what most considered a small reach on TFred.

If Zach Martin was their top target I wouldn't complain either.
But we now know he wasn't top 3 on the board for them of potential draftees and was even below Manziel.

There were a lot of really good players in this draft class and I am greedy enough to have wanted at least 4 of the 100.
