What are your opinions on the best graphic editing software (regardless of price)? Video editing software?

If price is no object, how can you answer any other than Photoshop and Premiere/After Effects? The Master Suite will set you back about $2500 but it's well worth the money (speaking as someone who made his employer spend the money for him).

I haven't tried Vegas yet, but I've read some really nice things about it. I've used and been very happy with Premiere exclusively for about a decade now though, so I'm not keen on moving in a different direction.

I use Photoshop CS4 for graphics (industry standard) and Premiere/After Effects CS4 for video. I'd love to have a mac for Final Cut. I hear nothing but good things about FCP.

I just got the cheapy version of this (if that is Vegas Pro 10)

namely Sony movie studio Vegas HD platinum 10 suite

It is bad-a , also there are rebates started today or yesterday like 20 bucks off this.

Beware of one important missing tool in the cheaper version is "masking" Personally I will use the long way to circumvent that but I am doing this as a hobby not making Pro video.

For picture editting or graphic design nothing beats the CS series of Photoshop. It's expensive but if you buy it through an educational source is considerably cheaper.

As for video editting I use iMovie or Final Cut on my mac.
Back when I did it on a PC I used Adobe Premier or Pinaccle. I didn't like Vegas much, no real reason why.
