Nah, people do their best work with their “backs to the wall” according to Jerry.

Problem is, no good player’s back is to the wall. If you’re going to eventually keep them, do it sooner than later and everyone wins.

Unless he's got some stipulation in his contract, he can absolutely be released on IR. He still has some gauranteed money due him so the 5M isn't going to dictate his release date.
