The Cowboys came out on opening day and played their tails off against a good San Diego Chargers team. Most Cowboy fans will tell you they were on the edge of their seat most of the game while the score was going back and forth. But when Aaron Glenn jumped up and grabbed that ball to end the game none of us were sitting down anymore. That was some game and it was definitely an electric start to this 2005 season.
Playing the Commanders on Monday Night Football while paying tribute to the Triplets was supposed to be one of the greatest nights in Cowboys history. Not to be. This game was all but a snooze fest except for the Flea flicker TD to Terry Glenn. Coach Parcells was fine with how the game was going because the Cowboys were winning as the new 3-4 Defense was dominating the Commanders. Then it happened, the entire night went from a celebration to a disaster within five minutes. No need to relive it all over again.
That week leading up to the 49ers game could not go fast enough. Nothing but the next game was going to get the taste of that Commanders loss out of our mouths. Plus the Niners weren’t going to be much trouble as they were coming off a 39-point loss to the Eagles. Well when it was 24-12 at halftime I will admit I was a little bit worried about this season. Remember when the cameras caught Larry Allen “talking” to the Jose Cortez? Thank god Drew Bledsoe is a quarterback who can toss the rock around when asked to because without him the Cowboys don’t win that game 34-31. Great comeback win by the Cowboys.
Then the Cowboys decided to stay in California and get ready for the Raiders in their third road game in four weeks. I was pretty sure it was going to be a nail biter. Randy Moss came out smoking, but the Cowboy’s defense decided to get it together and put his fire out rather quickly. LaMont Jordan won this game for the Raiders with his legs instead. If only Drew Bledsoe had thrown that last minute pass a little higher I think Terry Glenn would have at least gotten the first down.
With a record of 2-2 and the Eagles coming to town the entire world was focused on the Cowboys in week 5. Not only did the Cowboys win, but they spanked the Eagles in every phase of the game on their way to a 33-10 victory. After that game most of us were probably still in shock until about Wednesday. I knew the Cowboys were playing decent football and every team has a chance at home against a division rival, but to lay it on the Eagles like that was just plain unexpected. Coach Parcells had to be smiling from ear to ear as he went to sleep that night.
So far the Cowboys had been Jekyll and Hyde for the most part so we had no idea who was going to show up against the Giants. Dr. Jekyll seemed to be out their for 58 minutes, then Mr. Hyde came out and let Eli Manning tie up the game with under 30 seconds left. Can you say overtime? Jose Cortez for mayor was heard after he kicks the game winning 45-yarder as the Cowboys win 16-13. Two great wins over the last two games against two division foes was something to be very proud of at that point.
Back on the road to Seattle. This Cowboys defense is playing some seriously good football. About thirteen minutes to go and Mr. Hyde was back on the field and I guess he scared Jose Cortez into shanking a chip shot 29-yard field goal. Me, you and the rest of the world are still thinking the Cowboys and Coach Parcells are leaving with a 5-2 record though. Then turn the clock ahead to 14 seconds left in the game and I am on the floor praying to every God there is that the Cowboys win the coin flip in overtime. Turn the clock ahead to five days later and I am still asking myself, “what could Drew Bledsoe have been thinking when the threw that pass?”
Focus on the Cardinals and get to 5-3. Coach Parcells probably told his team that about 1000 times in the week leading up to the game. He even told the media that he made it a point to stress the importance of this game to his team. Talk about pressure. 34-13, a 5-3 record and a nice bright future to this 2005 season is what all that pressure amounted to last Sunday. As this game was ending I was thinking to myself, for the first time in a long time I really feel like this team is the real deal. This team plays hard, they work hard, they are in every game until the final gun and it’s not far fetched to say that they could have been 8-0 if a few things would have bounced their way. Not bad if I do say so myself.
Bring on the Eagles, the Lions, the Broncos, the Giants, the Chiefs, the Commanders, the Panthers and the Rams. Then bring on the playoffs because this team is definitely making the post-season tournament.
Go Cowboys!
