Eight men in the box obvious?

Without having to worry about Antonio Gates, is it obvious that we're going to play with 8 men in the box most of the game?

We're really not going to have to use the nickel very early in the game, but at some point I expect that San Diego will have to give up on the run completely if we shut it down early enough.

I don't think this game will become so lop sided that either team will just give up on the run. Being as though that is both of our meat and potatoes.

We have a lot more talent in our passing game than San Diego...

Their top wideout would be hard pressed to make our team. Definitely would be the 4th or 5th receiver. Newman will shut him down. And McCardell is going to be shut down by Anthony Henry.

I am not at all worried about their passing game. But they definitely need to be afraid of all facets of our offense.

They have no pass rush, and with no pass rush Bledsoe will chew them apart.

I think our secondary has an advantage over their Receiving core, the addition of Gates would only even the score.

I think we'll have the luxury of having Roy very close to the line of scrimmage without really worrying about any of their WRs dominating our DBs.

I think the key to this game is how we defend Tomlison pass catching ability out of the backfield.

Not that I like to dwell on years past, but San Diego's pass defense was the 3rd worst in the nfl last year. They were ranked 20th the year before that.

Both teams will stack the box. Roy will almost live in it. I seriously doubt either team's passing game really scares the other too much anyway.

I'd suggest you look at how many yards we put up when we still had Terry Glenn last year.

Teams will not be able to stack up against us without getting burned.

A lot of NFL offenses can beat you by throwing the ball. Hell, we don't really know how our offense will throw the ball versus San Diego's defense or vice versa since we haven't see either unit perform with a real game plan in hand.

Not this season anyway.

I guess what I'm getting at is, relatively speaking, the Dallas passing game is not one of the more potent passing attacks you'll find. Even with the additions in the offense. Marty knows Dallas wants to pound and control the clock, if it all possible. And my guess is that's what the Bolts will attempt to take away first.

Same with us. We have a lot of the same issues the Chargers have defensively. Thankfully, we seem to be healthier than SD in key areas and ready to go.

The more I look at this game the more I think we have a good chance. I picked SD, but if Parcells has been gunning for this week knowing he has 2 extremely winnable games in wk2 (skins) and wk3 (49ers) following, a win can happen -- and definitely won't disappoint me. There's a years worth of film on how to attack SD. There's nothing on Dallas.

We will definitely put 7 in the box, and many times 8. It may be for show pretty often, but it needs to be done both to get after LT and also to get at Brees to force him into mistakes.

Newman and Henry may be able to control the WRs by themselves. SD really does not have a strong WR crew. Their DBs are also not very good, which may mean they can't put 7 and 8 in the box vs us. Julius may do more damage than LT.

I'm only really worried about LT and his cutbacks. We had not contained real well in preseason and we are not experienced enough with the 3-4 I don't feel. We were gashed with some big runs.

the thing i worry about is the stupid screen pass.
They run it well, we defend against it poorly.
We can't run it, they can defend it.
really frustrating.

If you guys stack the box, it will be a very short game and an easy win for us.

You guys keep underestimating our receivers and our QB. You're too caught up in this "we don't have to worry about Gates" mindset. We do have other players on our team besides Gates and LT.

Yes, I know...no one is impressed with our receivers. That just makes it easier. Take a look at the numbers in Eric Parker's last four starts (including the playoff game vs. the Jets and remembering he didn't suit up for our last regular season game.) It was his first year as a starter, his stats are for only 10 games as an actual starter, and he came on real strong at the end including two 100 yard games.

McCardell's stats are for the seven games he played for us last year, and Caldwell missed the last 11 games. These guys can play and we never had all three of them on the field at one time last year.

Don't understimate Roys ability to hurt opponents. Its uncanny how many guys he takes out.

Should be a great game!

34-17 Dallas.

I have nothing but respect for Roy, but I also know he's not a cover guy.

Thunderstruck, what's the Chargers fans main forum site? I always like visiting both teams messageboards to see what everyone's talking about.

agreed - we are not going to play him in center field in coverage.

He's in the box crushing people. Beware the 3-4 drops by LB's and our stellar CB's.

Pawn to King 4.

I'll agree that people are probably underestimating your receivers a little bit, but we have 3 cornerbacks that I think can handle one on ones if they have to. Will we pay with the occasional big play against us? we just might. But if we can make you get off your gameplan because the running game isn't there like it usually is then I think it's worth it.
