By Doug Farrar
Going into Baltimore with the most anemic offense in the NFL, you knew the Browns were in danger of going 0-3 for the season. But even the most cynical Browns-watcher could not have expected the debacleization that occurred. Cleveland started with Brady Quinn(notes) throwing six completions in eight attempts for 34 yards (way to air it out!), no touchdowns and one interception. But with nothing going on, Eric Mangini decided to replace Quinn with Derek Anderson(notes), figuring it couldn't get any worse.
Wrong-o.
In one half of football. Anderson went 11-of-19 for 92 yards, no touchdowns, and THREE picks. He also took a sack in a rare Browns red zone play, when he ambled around, trying to avoid pressure, and fell down. Haloti Ngata(notes) thanked him for the free sack. Anderson was throwing pop flies into stacked coverage in a display of horribleness the likes of which you will rarely see. Baltimore destroyed Cleveland, 34-3. What are the Browns to do?
At this point, I think it's best to just put returner/receiver/former college quarterback Josh Cribbs behind center on every play. The Browns are at their most dynamic offensively with Cribbs in the shotgun, running their "Flash" package (their version of the Wildcat), and it isn't as if there's anyone qualified to throw Cribbs, or Braylon Edwards(notes), or anyone else, the ball. If the Browns hope to be competitive at all, they should scrap the traditional offense altogether and go option-read all the way. Or, they can alternate between two quarterback disasters in perpetuity, until the latest Belichick disciple is fired and they start this nightmare all over again.
Browns fans, you deserve better than this.

Last night I was thinking with the growing use of the "wildcat" formation, could we see a day when the traditional QB position is eliminated? Just asking, but with so few "franchise" QB's, why put the ball in the hands of players like Quinn, Anderson, DelHomme, Wallace, etc. Why not put it into the hands of a dynamic player who has many options and his own creativity to use instead of a player who can't throw the ball much better anyway?

Well, just wonderin' out loud anyway.:laugh2:

If players like Vick or Young or Mcnabb couldn't get it done doesn't expect cribbs to be anything special.

You mean go back to the Wing T?

Braylon Edwards will just drop any passes they managed to throw to him anyway. Might as well try something different.

None of those guys is as good an open field runner as Cribbs, though Vick comes close.

Vick in prime would have been a legit spread-option QB though. Blame Mora for going all west coast on him.

If your QBs are playing as badly as Quinn and Anderson, how much worse could it get with the Wing T?

Maybe it'll start a trend. Oakland would be next.....

option football wont work in the NFL...its a gimmick and nothing else

NFL defensive players are too big and fast. It works in college because most teams dont have enough players with the size/speed combination to deal with it, but in the NFL almost every team has good enough speed to neutralize it.

You're right, Russell looks bad. I didn't think he was worthy of a 1st round pick much less the #1 overall pick, but I didn't think he would be this bad. I figured he would just turn out to be an okay QB and maybe have a decent year or two at some point. Now I doubt if even that happens. He is horrible.

Not really a decent season, but a good string of games against a last place schedule. He only cracked a 90 QB rating 4 times that year and piled up numbers on teams such as the Bengals. He was simply exposed for what he is the next year.

:hammer:

To think, just a few years ago, the Cowboys suffered from the same uninspiring QB play as the Browns.

It's too early on Quinn. He has not been terrible, but the Browns have no running game to speak of, the O-Line is swiss cheese, and the receivers drop every other pass. Tell me what QB on earth could succeed in that debacle. I just don't think a fair evaluation can be made of Quinn until they fix some of the other things. Quinn has not moved that ball too well, but he also didn't give up too many big plays like Anderson did in just one quarter.

The Browns need to fix many areas of the offense before they will truly know where Quinn is. Of course, playing the Vikings and the Ravens in two of the first three games doesn't help either.

Aren't the Browns one of the teams that fired their O coordinator just before the start of the season?

I don't think so, but they probably should have. But, they have personnel problems first and foremost. The Rreceivers just can't catch. The O-line has given up double digit sacks after two games. They have no runningback to speak of unless you consider Jamal Lewis decent, when he plays. Cribbs is the biggest weapon they have and if anything, he should be somewhere on the field at all times. They still play him like we play Felix......not nearly enough.

Yes he decided to have the only decent season the Browns have had this millenium the year we owned their 1st round pick.
