I was stunned to see how little people understood football last year. And the length people will still go to make excuses for Prescott and Garrett.
Many people suggested that Dak was an elite QB in his rookie year and that he was the MVP of the team and possibly the league last year. And they gave Garrett coach of the year.
The reality is that Elliott was a top 3 RB in the league last year (if not the best RB in the league) and as such the game plan and offensive line were allowed to be truly balanced. This increases a QBs rating tremendously. The best example of this was when Brett Favre went to the Vikings at age 40 after going to the Jets from the Packers.
At age 38 with Green Bay his QB rating was 95.7. Very high. He went to the Jets at 39 and his QB rating dropped to 81. All of a sudden he goes to the Vikings with Adrian Peterson and he posts a 107.2 QB rating, the best of his career by far (previous high was 99.5 at age 26).
With Elliott and a fairly easy schedule, people became convinced that an average rookie QB (bus driver) was an elite QB and that a terrible HC was coach of the year.
It should be noted that while Dak Prescott had a very high QB rating last year, he was 15th in the league in touchdown passes (tied with Blake Bortles) and 19th in the league in passing yards.
He is now 19th in the league in QB rating. Would it be higher with Elliott? Obviously, but the point I think people missed with Wentz comparisons last year is that Wentz would have excelled behind this offensive line with this running back. He almost certainly would utilize Bryant and Beasley better, which Prescott hasn't been able to do well all year. He is 14th in the league in passing yards and 25th in the league in yards per attempt.
Any competent QB would excel in our offense with this running back playing. He takes a ton of pressure off of you as a QB. That isn't to say that the Brandon Weeden's and Matt Cassell's of the world would have success, but top talented quarterbacks would, and I've never counted Dak among them.
Romo had a great year with Murray behind him and Elliott is a step above. Romo would have had a great year last year, and would certainly have won that Green Bay game. He should still be our starter now, and Dak should have had time to develop his talents before being thrust into the starting role. He took all of the major allocates from the true MVP last year, which was Elliott, doing something truly special.
Defensive coordinators can now say, they need to beat us passing the ball, and that just isn't something we can do. Not with this defense.
At this point, I would try to get Sean Payton as HC and Drew Brees for a couple years while we build out this defense. Neither Jason Garrett or Dak Prescott are going to take you to the super bowl. At this rate, we'll waste a hall of fame running back and potential hall of fame offensive linemen. Just as we wasted the careers of a hall of fame caliber QB and hall of fame tight end.
