ANG Newspapers reports that Raider DL Greg Ellis had his arthritic knee drained, which could limit him in practice.

According to Giant HC Tom Coughlin, DE Chris Canty (calf) will not practice this week.

Arthritic knee is probably a big reason he was let go.

I'll tell you a player I wish we would've taken a look at after see'ing him last night.

I completely understand why the Cowboys didn't go after the guy but Jason Taylor looked awesome as a pass rusher last night.

Don't get me wrong though I think Spencer is on the cusp of having a huge game anytime now and is very active on the field but Taylor looks like he got his head right and wants to be a football player again.

I don't think we can deny that we miss Ellis on the left side. Spencer may ultimately turn into a heck of a player for us, I hope he does, but we sorely miss the attention and production we got from that side of the line last year.

I can't point my finger to why Spencer isn't as good as he should be. I mean from my eyes he's out there making plays. You never see him get beat in coverage, pretty good on the run, he always gets to the quarterback but never the sack. Ware has had the same problem. I hope Spencer benefits the most from the Bye week. I wasn't sold on him last season but I like the tools he's shown this year. He's just a half a second of way from getting a sack.

Spencer has a different role than Ellis who was basically just a pass rusher.

Well, last year Ellis had 36 tackles, 25 Solo. to go with 8 sacks.

This year, he has 15 tackles, 13 Solo and 4 sacks in 5 games. I think it's a valid point that you don't know if he's going to be able to play the whole season but if he does, those numbers project to 48 tackles, 41.5 Solo and 12.5 sacks.

At this point, Spencer has 13 tackles, 9 Solo. I don't see the roles being as different as one might suspect.

I really hope he finds his rush game because we definately need to relieve some pressure from Ware. Would make a huge difference for us.

I think this defense has missed what Ellis brought to it on game day. I don't think this team misses his whinning though.

I dont think Taylor felt he belonged with the Skins and for that matter any other team. he has a history with Miami, he wants to live it up down there and life is alrite. I dont think he would have felt right in another city and its possible he knows its his last year, so give them a last hah rah and be done with it.

ONly thing I will point in that stats is, I don't see Passes defended, which I am sure, SPencer will have beat Ellis by large margin. For a guy who looks slow, sure can cover.

Yeah, so far Spencer has been day late and dollar short on impact. He seems so close, yet so far.

I see the close but don't see that far part at all. You were probably just trying to be poetic

Hmm... Yeah, I didn't know it wasn't obvious

Until Spencer starts getting production and consistent pressure I will say it was a mistake to let Ellis go. I mean we can talk all we want about how good spencer looks and what not but the bottom line is we are not getting to the QB this year like we did last. Why?.......Ellis apparently

That's a very fair point RC. I don't think that Ellis was ever a good fit for coverage. However, if given the option, I'd rather have the pressure. I can find somebody else to cover. We gotta figure out a way to get our guys free or it's going to be a long season.
