@JoeyBoy718

This is it! Thanks man, it's Slam Poetry. As soon as I read it in your post, I knew it. Found the best one I've ever heard, and my all-time favorite prof shared with us as we were covering the mixed genre (Cross-Genre/Hybrid-Genre are the actual names) in Lit.

If you're a fan of this kind of flow, it's unreal. He goes over it all. Incredible. @Reality, his pace is fast, too :)

Edit -- it has language so I begrudgingly deleted it. If anyone cares, it's "Def Poetry Jam - Saul Williams (Coded Language)." Dude goes off, with a long, Harry Potter magic spell-length scroll in a single poem/rhyme. Furious and passionate. Just mashes.

I'll stop, as I've veered the OP's Topic off course (apologies).

That's the reality that many of these artists/bands face. They change and people rant about them changing and they aren't who they used to be. They don't change, people rant that they keep putting out the same material, keep sounding the same, and need to change. It's a double-edged sword.

Eminem talks in his material how he basically out-did himself with his previous work. He set the bar really REALLY high, even for him to live up to. Guy is an amazing artist if you ask me.

So someone who never had any interest in Beyonce or Pink must start liking them or else they aren't a true Eminem fan? It's not even the same genre of music anymore. He might as well pick up a banjo and start doing country.

I guess I have higher standards for Eminem considering his track record. I've always been a fan of rap and never cared for R&B or pop. I don't really see how the two are related. I guess since rap has basically become pop, it isn't out of the ordinary for the top rappers to rub elbows with the top singers. I was never into it. I miss the days when an NWA would never do a collabo with a Whitney Houston. Oh well.
I agree so much with this. Almost all artists are over-doing this but rap has taken a nose dive in regards to collabs = turns into pop/another genre of party rap almost. Every song has at least another, if not two other artists on the track. It's easier of course, and brings in other fans to hear your music (the collab artists' fans) but more times than not it sounds cheap and rushed. I used to not like rap songs with even an r&b (refrain) but have found some gems to break that stance. I wish those were the random exceptions instead of the standard.

There's actually a name for this style [bolded], Reality, and for the life of me I can't remember it from my English 102 class. Its obviously not freestyle rapping, or a cappella. It's a growing trend and has merit, both in the artistic/music/rap scene, but also in lit, as it's more poetry than it is music (like rap, hip hop etc)

Damn, I wish I could recall the name of the genre, as there's some magnificent stuff out there. Now I'm curious as to how well Em did, as that type of artistry is no joke, and tough to do. Its a very niche genre, but incredibly respected within the art world and Lit world.

@BigStar, maybe you can help me out?

Also, Reality, I think Eminem separated himself forever, in 1998. Its just that his style has gone stale in recent years. It's still unique to him, but he hasn't evolved as we all would've liked. Still, he has 3 albums in my top-100, all time.
You guys are teaching me right now tbh Trouty. I can see the inner monologue rap of someone like Lamar sounding just like slam poetry though. The DNA song (among many others) pop out right away, Swimming pool, money trees, etc. An off beat moratorium to allow the artist to just speak the heart basically, then back to the standard song/beat, etc.

A group like The Fugees blends rapping and singing perfectly. There are also many classic singing hooks like Juicy for example. But these modern collabos don't even make an effort to make it work. Those Eminem verses could've easily been replaced by Beyonce singing and you'd never know it was originally a rap song.

Great example. Was great that Lauryn Hill could rap and sing (very well at that) that allowed their sound to be so fluent.

Hill's singing flows perfectly with beat and rap verses.

I hear ya. Hate to say, you end up just having to pick out a few of those singles that reflect his old style; probably the few songs wo collabs if had to guess. I only heard his first single. When a lot of rap went that way, there would still be some "ol school" hits you could tell they put in for their initial fans. Not anywhere near Eminem's fame/$/notoriety, but I had to give three six mafia a break from all the bad collabs they were popping out, but knew who to look out for when singles dropped; Project Pat and Juicy J bc they were the only ones throwin old school hits to us older fans.

I think you're taking my words out of context. It literally means nothing to me if you do or don't want to like Eminem's new album. That is your prerogative. I could, however, give you advice on trying to stay open-minded. Really though, I'm not here to debate. I absolutely love Eminem as an artist and that is all that matters to me. Disagree, feel free.

Spoken word is also known as slam poetry.

Not exactly.

Slam Poetry, or a Poetry Slam, is competitive event with the goal of crowning a winner.

Spoken Word is any sort of poetry that is written with the intention of being performed.

Not an earth shattering distinction, but "slam poetry" has become a derogatory term for a certain cliched style of spoken word.

T.I.L. that it's no longer just a "Rap-off" but has evolved into a "Slam-poetry" contest,,,

I used to love Eminem's content, but like others here have mentioned, his act is stale now.

He conformed to mainstream styles and other than his signature lyrics, it's all the same music as hundreds of other rappers.

I'd rather hear fingernails on a chalk board than anything remotely sounding like c(rap)
