Emmitt: Are you sure Pickens is a 1 WR?

In Cowboys championship years we had two top receivers. We didn’t call them WR 1 or WR 2. They both were top receivers and complimented each other.

Drew Pearson and Tony Hill
Michael Irvin and Alvin Harper

Pickens may have talent that is close to WR1 but he has baggage which isn’t. And we saw that in a couple games.

We can’t pay him WR1 market price but he is deserving of a substantial deal. But Id be cautious. I’d like to see a short term deal like 2 years.
Two year deals are rare to begin with and almost unheard of in a situation like Pickens.

If it gets to th point the Cowboys are negotiating a two year deal, he’s absolutely gone and signing a four year deal with any of a half dozen or more teams.

I get that, but it’s not like he wasn’t considered a high capability receiver. Definitely not chopped liver. Teams had an opportunity to get him for a 3rd round pick and have only 1 year of cheap exposure. I suspect the personality concerns haven’t completely abated and teams will be less inclined to offer a king’s ransom in picks and bag. This just feels like he’s going to be a Cowboy this year.
From what I read, and things my Steelers fan friend told me. From her connections in Pittsburgh. Meaning her family and friends that listen to the sports talk there. No inside info.
Except one person she worked with when she worked at the stadium. But stil only sports talk stuff.

Pickens wanted out. And they obligated him. And one of his teams was Dallas. They took a little less than what a few other teams offered out of respect for him.
But no rumors of how much less. Could not have been that big of a difference. But still they obliged him.

Good insight. If it’s true he wanted to come to Dallas bodes well for Dallas retaining him. But regardless of what players say, the $ are priority. We shall see.

One thing he is, for sure, is a big time playmaker.

He's averaged at least 15 yards per catch in each of his four NFL seasons.

Out of 56 players with 200-plus catches since the start of 2022, he ranks No. 1 in yards per catch at 16.0.

In what world isn't Pickens a WR1?
I think that the debate around him isn’t “talent”, it’s the intangibles that are the issue. If Pickens were the sole #1 on this team, I’m not convinced that he wouldn’t melt down with double coverage.

He MIGHT be A.J. Brown without the security of a big money deal in his pocket.

Then perhaps franchise tag is best option for now.

I doubt Mughaletta advises him to sign a 2 year deal.
Probably not but with Pickens history I’d stay away from long term deal and probably why Franchise Tag is best course.

If he doesn’t like it and schluffs off with an attitude , we let him walk next year and he’ll be damaged goods again.

Better yet maybe we trade him and retrieve some of draft capital we gave up.

You're stretching it now.
By this definition, Jerry Rice would be a #2 receiver.
You need to reread if that is how you took it. The point is there is no perfect player. All players have weaknesses or things about them that you would like to see get better. His take was lame. I could say a #1 WR doesn’t drop as many balls as CeeDee or disappear like Jefferson did. Or act like a fool off the field like Puka and Irvin. What makes a great player great is having more pluses than minuses.
