Say it's the day after the Seattle debacle. You open up a file that says:

2007, Romo will show he's the real deal. 13-3 record. Lose to Super Bowl Champs.

2008, 9-7 record, multiple significant injuries, miss playoffs, Terrell implodes team.

If you accept the above conditions, you will emerge in 2009 with a pair of Jay Novacek's, and the best trio of running backs in the entire NFL.

Do you accept the mission?

FYI, Witten > Novacek. As for Bennett, if he keeps his head on straight, he damn well could be better than Witten. Physically, he is far superior to Witten.

I do not think that Bennett has the drive and determination of Witten and that will be clear in the time ahead. He will never maximise his talent as Witten has.

I don't think Bennett has to put forth as much effort as Witten does to be better than Witten. The guys seems to have the natural ability to play like Witten, but he is far superior physically.

This makes it sound like we made it to the Super Bowl and lost. I don't know about you guys, but when the Cowboys lose a Super Bowl, it is the worst feeling in the world. It's worse than not making it there in the first place. I know you young folks don't know how that feels because it has been so long since the Cowboys have sniffed such success.

Back to the thread topic. I'll accept the mission. The team is in place. It's just a matter of coaching and execution in all three phases of the game.

I think you're putting the horses waaaay out in front of the wagon here. Go back and watch many of Bennett's nice plays last year, and he's wide open catching the ball and then running after the catch. The only reason he was wide open on these plays is because Jason Witten is on the field.

I certainly don't deny that Bennett is a better athlete than Witten. But it takes a lot more than athleticism to be a great tight end. When Bennett starts running routes like Witten and can get wide open down the seam or show that he can make the clutch catches and find the holes in zones to be a safety valve for Romo, then we can start saying he has a chance to be better.

For now, he's a good 2nd tight end who is going to get a lot of opportunities because defenses have to focus on the best tight end in football instead of him.

It's what he does with those opportunities that will tell us whether or not we truly have a gem in the #2 TE spot.

You are trying to spin 13-3. Why did you leave out the fact that the team was one and done despite number one seed in the NFC?

Bennett will never be as good as Witten until he and Romo secretly meet to draft up special plays.

Uh, that would kind of be the point. You don't know how any of those scenarios are actually going to play out on January 14th, 2006. The only certainty is that you'll end up losing the mouth that roars, have two outstanding TE's, and have the best trio of running backs in the NFL.

Nothing more, nothing less.
