i don't like the idea that the cowboys are forced to draft-by-position, such as locking their sights on the top-rated QB available with their first pick. to me - that's 'chasing' the position instead of making the best pick. while i do agree they should plan on drafting a QB - i think the team would be better off to go with their board and take the BPA in the first round. and if first-round BPA ends up being a QB... so much the better.
I don't really subscribe to this best player available. I subscribe to finding the player you like, for the position you need, and go get him. These coaches are going to have to do their jobs though.

You can take any of these top 3 QBs and make them Super bowl caliber if you know what you're doing. I have doubt they know what they're doing, but you still have to go after a QB at some point and there's no better time like the present. You can forget about making mistakes because that's the nature of drafting. You WILL make mistakes over and over. But you must make a move now at one of these QBs.

How many healthy seasons has he had vs injuries? That contract is looking really bad.

He's playing out of position. He's not a legit DT. I don't think he will stay healthy playing inside. I've said this all along. Part of the problem I have with Marinelli. He thinks he can just put players wherever. Tell them to suck it up and go out and be all pros. Doesn't work that way.

Now he has a big fat contract. I'd still like to see what he could do at strong side DE. Get his weight back down to 270-275. Move Lawrence back to the weakside. Have Gregory be the backup. This then frees us up from having to resign Hardy. He could move inside on passing downs like we did with Hardy this year. We then get ourselves a true 3T in the draft. Irvin showed us a little something. Russell was spending some time there as well.

We need to get bigger up front on defense.

I'd look to FA for a 1T DT. Replacing Hayden is a must. A guy like Ian Williams, Damon Harrison or Ahtyba Rubin would all be upgrades.

Mincey will finally be off this roster.

I'd also look to FA for a legit Safety to replace Church. Weddle, David Bruton or Cherry

Probably look to resign Claiborne if you can do it on the cheap. I think we're stuck with Carr for another year. You'd save money by cutting him, but then you'd only have 2-3 million to find his replacement. Might as well keep him.

I'd bring back Ro McClain for a deal like he signed this year. Just make sure he's at camp to start the year.

On offense I'd try to get Marvin Jones at WR. Dump Williams. Resign Leary and Bern. We also need a speed WR. Butler could be a nice #3. Beasley is vastly overpaid for what he brings.

Draft needs would then be: 3T, QB, CB, RB, LB, SS, WR(speed guy)

I'd try to move down in the draft. I've gone back and forth on whether to take a QB in the first and have now decided to go all in with Romo next year. But I'd still look at the second round for a QB.

If we could move down 10 spots and pick up a second and fourth it would be ideal.

We would then have the 14th pick and draft picks like the following:

1st - A'Shawn Robinson (DT)
2nd - Carson Wentz (QB)
2nd (trade) - Kendall Fuller (CB)
3rd - Alex Collins (RB)
4th - Bralon Addison (WR)
4th (trade) - Eric Striker (LB)
4th (comp) - Deon Bush (SS)
6th - Matt Ioannidis (DT)
6th (comp) - Tyler Marz (OT)
6th (comp) - Josh Forrest (ILB)
6th (comp) - Ugonna Awuruonye (DE)

The defense is not as good as some want to paint it. We are small on the front and it shows late in games. Linebackers getting eaten up. At corner we are very thin and this will be Carr's last year. Church/Wilcox are not getting the job done. Thomas will be good. We need size in the front and playmakers on the back.

On offense, we need more speed on the outside and a playmaker at running back. Along with a legit backup for the future. Dez scares me with that injury.

I would go all in this year and next cap wise to maximize what we have left with Romo.

I would also shake up the coaching staff. We know Garrett isn't leaving, but that doesn't mean others can't. We need to shake up the offensive scheme and make sure we have someone here that can groom a young QB. I'm not impressed with Marinelli either, but I'm sure he will still be here.

Just looking at the draft trade charts, to move from 4 to 14, you could pick up the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and still be about 75 points short of an even swap (3rd next year?). Admittedly, I don't know what I would do. There are so many variables that come into play...it really comes down to what all transpires between now and the draft combined with the players that are available when your pick comes up (where you rank them vs where you're picking).

Yeah, a 2 and a 4 might be lite to move down that far. But its really up to how bad a team wants to move up. Point is, get more picks. I'd love another 3rd for that move.

That is the key. JJ cannot come off as wanting to sell...he needs to be patient and wait for the buyer to come to him (if he's even considering a trade down at all).

I think that's why Jerry is now backtracking a little about his interest in a QB. If he's sitting there at 4 with one, or both, of the QBs still on the board, someone will be interested in trading up. But he has to keep up the illusion of potentially picking one himself.

Yep. I remember one of the local writers a few years back comparing JJ to one of the dogs in the painting of dogs playing poker...Jerry's the one who's tail is wagging while he's looking at his hand. Hope he can keep his tail from wagging this time around.
