didn't think this belonged in the 'sports' zone

The Texas Tech coach and her seven chessmasters who won their second straight national championship this month will all return next year to defend their title. But they'll be doing it at a different school.
In an unprecedented move in the world of college competition, Texas Tech's entire team will transfer to Webster University in the chess hotbed of St. Louis, home to the World Chess Hall of Fame. The private university promised more funding for the team and access to a new, 6,000-square-foot learning center in the city....

For chess? More funding? It costs more than six bucks a season? Is there a season?

That would be difficult to do since TT no longer has a Chess team. :laugh2:

Did I miss that they are dropping that "activity" from altogether then? Surely it can't be that difficult to get a new chess "coach" and have a few chess knowledgeable kiddies form a new team?

I suppose they could, but how good are they actually going to be? :laugh2:

Good for them. Bad for TT.

Chess, the game of Kings! :)

It really is. There is so much more to chess than how most people play. Most people see the squares and can't think 3 moves in front of themselves.

Chess was a hobby of mine. (abet cyclical hobby) Though I haven't played since probably 2010 now.

Anyhow, if you like Chess check out the Chess Tactics Server. It is fun and you can really learn / improve a lot quickly. Tactics are the best way to improve your game early on. (say sub 1500 ELO rating)

If you replaced the last "s" with a "t' then you might have a newsworthy story.

Shouldn't they have to sit out a year, just like real sports? Because otherwise some colleges will just "buy" the best teams.
