A few thoughts on this.
If the Marriott are saying most people don't realise it's customary to leave a tip doesn't that mean that it isn't customary after all?
When waiting staff end up out of pocket due to little or no tip being left surely that suggests that the system is seriously flawed more than the customers should have left a bigger tip?
Tipping is customary in Europe though usually at smaller percentages because as was said the staff are actually paid by their employer.
