Envelopes in Marriott hotels invite tips for maids

A few thoughts on this.
If the Marriott are saying most people don't realise it's customary to leave a tip doesn't that mean that it isn't customary after all?
When waiting staff end up out of pocket due to little or no tip being left surely that suggests that the system is seriously flawed more than the customers should have left a bigger tip?
Tipping is customary in Europe though usually at smaller percentages because as was said the staff are actually paid by their employer.

I have no problem giving tips.

Weirdly enough i love doing it, makes me feel better.

FWIW some states everyone is entitled to minimum wage. I used to wait tables in Texas and was $2.04 per hour. In Oregon waited tables and tended bar and was paid minimum wage.
