As we’re all starting to realize, the 2013 NFL draft is all about the defenders. From the line backwards, this is more than a deep draft on the defensive side of the ball. One such position that includes a bunch of excellent talents is the safety position.

When trying to see what kind of safety can be separated from the chaff you must look at physical talents. Of course he has to be able to knock the ball down, but let’s be honest – it’s about speed, vertical jumping and athleticism.

One player who is well beyond all the others in this regard is Eric Reid.

Im on record that I'd love him as well. He is a dog. A playmaker. His coverage deficiencies are overrated IMO.

I like him more and more, lately. He's definitely my favourite among the top ranked safeties.

Eric Reid will disappoint you if drafted by Dallas. He is overrated. His pass defense is below average. He can only tackle.

I like him, but if I want a safety that you're unsure how his coverage will be, I'll take Elam (shocker I know).

wrong, I think he is great in coverage, just didn't see it much in LSU due to playing out of position at SS. Reid is a true FS but had to play SS and alot in the box in his career at LSU.

People who never really watched LSU or Reid play look at his highlight videos on youtube and don't see great highlights, then your not seeing the true player.

Reid was the leader and captain of the LSU secondary the last two years. Putting players in position to make plays.
Reid is a great ball player I would love for Dallas to get.

You're wrong. I was at the games and he was not good in coverage.

If he turns out to be great I will eat my crow, but I don't see what you and others see in him.

We will see...

I don't think he will ever be great but he will be a good solid pro in the right system. He will be a good player for Dallas, I never said he would be great.

I've seen ever college game he ever played in, when ask to play the back zone, he is very good in coverage, when asked to play man he is very good.

LSU asked him to play in the box at SS a lot this year to help stop the run, he was out of position a lot on passing plays and played in the box which hurt his stats.

I like Cyprien and Vaccaro better, but I would be happy with Reid.

No, it's not just about physical talent.

A huge part of playing safety is the mental/instincts component. If it was only about athleticism, it would be much easier to evaluate the position.

Did anyone actually read that article? pretty terrible writing.

'Come draft day, look out for this guy or he’ll run right past you and down the sidelines to intercept balls for the team that’s playing your team.'

lol.

I watched LSU play a few times this season and it always seemed like Reid was getting beat in coverage. It actually stood out to me. He's a good physical specimen though, and is a good tackler at the position.
