Kruger would have been a disastrous signing. Larger financial commitment, not as good a pass rusher as Spencer, and not nearly as good against the run. And Kruger is a pure 3-4 OLB as well.

I'd definitely prefer to give that contract to Kruger than Spencer just on the basis of age. Kruger is 26 and coming on strong with 8.5 sacks last year and 4.5 in the playoffs with multiple key plays. He is only going into his fifth year now and appears to be coming on strong.
Spencer is turning 29 and is smaller. He has been a better run defender but that is not what this defense is about.
I really do think we need to bring in a premier young DL soon and Spencer need not apply for the position I"m talking about someone 25-27 years old who we can sign to a 5-year deal. I have grave fears since we have only spent one 3rd rounder on the DL since the 2007 draft and don't have much in the pipeline unless Crawford turns the corner for us. Rat is old and beaten up and will be gone after this year. Ware is having injury issues. Spencer cannot come to terms that the team will agree to after two years of negotiation and will not be franchised again.
Next year I favor a high profile young FA and a premium draft pick for the DL.
Only 1.5 sacks in the games without Suggs, and then he did his damage once Suggs got back. Rule #1 of free agency is you don't give monster contracts to players that Ozzie lets walk.
