Escobar Blocking Issues

You can't be a big mismatch if you can't run. And he's not going to jump over anyone, either. I hated this pick on draft day. I hate it today.

Broadus says it's already obvious that Hanna will be the #2 tight end. What an indictment.

Can't block. Can't run. What the hell were the Cowboys thinking? At least some of the other picks are turning out better.

I am really suspicious of anyone that played D1 football for 3 years and benches that pathetically. It's not like he is a DB or something, he has a big frame. Is it work ethic? How the heck do you only bench 225 12 times? What was he doing in the off season?

I'm 52 years old, 5'9" tall and even I can do 3 reps. This is a big young guy. I cannot begin to fathom this pick.

He is very agile, has good size and long arms. He has a 32" vertical at 6'6" 255 lbs. He has ecellent hands and ball skills. There are anecdotes of him blocking well and very poorly. Look at the link I gave above where he pancakes a 275 lbs defensive end. He isn't going to be Kendall Watkins but this notion that he won't be a mismatch for safeties and LBers in the passing game is ignorant.

He had the second best shuttle and 3-cone time at this past combine. Making assumptions about his work ethic is fun though I guess. Have to fill in those blanks with bias after all.

Exactly, he strikes me as a player that has gotten by on his athleticism and hasnt really had to put the effort in his career. I just looked at the combine numbers for the DB's that did the bench, and I counted at least 35 that did 12 reps or better. Laughable.

It's weird, that the people who liked the player on draft day seem to have high expectations for him still, and the people who hated the pick, don't like how the player is turning out so far. It's almost like there's not enough data available on the player yet, or something.

We knew what we where getting, if blocking was so important for the role he's gonna play we should have never drafted him

Agreed. If blocking was main priority...Escobar would be very far down that list. He is WR playing TE.

Parcells, Landry had the 3 years rule. Cowboyszone has the 3 month rule.

Months? I'm sure there were 20 certain and disapproving posts on draft day before 3 *minutes* had passed.

Both guys who had a lot of success before free agency. Keep in mind, Parcells won his last Super Bowl 3 years before Larry Allen was drafted. It's easy to give a guy 3 years when he could be on the team indefinitely. The average career in the NFL.

The vast majority of safeties and linebackers are faster than Escobar. A 32 inch vertical is fine, but nothing at all special for an NFL player.

To sum up...he's been rated as the worst blocker in the preseason...across the whole league. He's not strong. He's pokey slow for a receiving threat. And as a high draft pick he's looking impossibly behind a low draft pick in Hanna. Get back to me when you got something.

Yes.

Jimmy Graham 38 1/2
Gronk 33 1/2
Gonzalez 36
Vernon Davis 42
Gates 39
Hernandez 33

I mean, its OK, but nothing special. Of course, we can't measure his "elite hands" when he was playing high school level talent, so we just have to take everyone's word on it. If Travis Fredrick was 3rd string right now, people would be pretty upset. You wouldn't hear any of this 3 year crap.

I am not saying this guy is a bust, I just don't think he was a good pick at 47.

No, it's really not. But since we're on simplistic analogies, how about this...for my everyday, "workhorse" car, handling and acceleration is far more important than top-end speed because I am weaving in and out of traffic far more often than I'm hitting top possible speed. Escobar is that car -- his three cone drill and 20 yard shuttle were fantastic, which is far more important for a TE than the 40.

We weren't talking about "top-end speed" yet you said he is not "slow". If someone says a car is slow I don't sit and think about the car and how it handles and accelerates, I usually think about the top end speed.

Rather than say "He is not slow. He just has slow 40." You could have instead explained how you didn't think his speed was important. Instead you said he "wasn't slow".

I don't see too many people ripping the pick. It's basically a discussion on how he can improve so he can be used more.

When it comes to blocking there is nowhere to go but up for Escobar. Did you see him get folded up like an accordian on the goal line final TD versus the Raiders? Pitiful.

People should be focusing on the fact we didn't need a TE, especially that high.

He hasn't even played 1 real game yet. It's literally impossible to know if he'll be good or not.

I'm bugged because we have Witten in his prime and holes on the o-line and d-line.

To be fair, you don't really need to be all that strong to play in the Mountain West.

Good call.

Luckily we didnt need anyone to help in the trenches during the 2nd round of the draft. If we did, Id be mad.

I think most critics already went through that stage after going through two previous failed attempts with Fasano and Bennett.

I was not a fan of the choice as we had other more pressing needs with such a high choice, but started to rationalize based on the fact that it appeared that two TEs would be a big part of the base offense. In other words, I started to eat the cheese a little.

Now it is back to square one since it does not appear like he will be able to get on the field in the 12 personnel package ahead of Hanna and could very well be doing the "Bobby Carpenter find a small role for him" dance for a while until he gets "stronger".
