somewhere in Commander Park, Danny Snyder is getting ideas

Washington D.C.-Hoping to start a trend Daniel Snyder offers a Schmoe from the local Wal-Mart a 4 year 35 million dollar contract with 15 million dollar signing bonus to play QB for his team. He figures if he can't beat them maybe they should join him in the smelly pits of mediocrity, and incompetence.

Sure would like to see us re-sign Gurode in addition to Columbo and Mcbriar. Also, Crayton needs to be resigned, though he may be restricted....

is it me or am i the only one seeing players waning more $$$, not a better ability to sign who we want cause somehow while the $ to spend goes up, the $ a "star" wants *won't*?

It's not only you. I learned it in Econ 101

Those who are under contract won't suddenly get more money added to their contract, and I doubt any of our guys will hold out to renegotiate their contract.

So, considering that most of our players already are under contract for 2007, that means we'll have a lot of money to spend on NEW players. The question is whether there will be enough good players on the market to spend a lot.

The point is any free agents we might be interested in will go up in value.

To me the cap is in a strange way irrelevent. Every team has the same number to work with so the only advantage is the make-up of rosters. The better systems (e.g., NE) find a way to find value and others (e.g, Wash :laugh2: ) find ways to flush their $$$$ down the toilet. We seem to be doing a good job finding value so the system is actually an advantage for us. I also like the way we've found good players lower in the draft and as undrafted FA's. They're cheaper!

I'm with you on Gurode and McB the other 2 we may be able to upgrade. Ideally, I'd like to see some of the cap room paid to a RT. Crayton could probably be replaced with Hurd or Austin if he asks for too much. If Austin is as good as BP says, he could be an upgrade on the field at a lower price.

but any FAs out there now know there's more $ in the bank, so they'll demand more accordingly. and when they get more, then our own FA's (who now have some time to sit and watch it go up) will want more because we paid an "outsider" more.

if the problem *now* is that we need more cap money to fill gaps and get better players, why is it now that we're at a record high we still have the problem when not long ago it was what, $70 mil?

raising the cap just raises the average price per player, that's all.

Thanks Adam......I see more groceries down the road.
Hopefully, not just a bunch of named brand groceries that are overrated in quality.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

In the current system, a rapid rise in cap level (i.e. 21 mil in 2006) is an advantage to established teams looking more so to keep what they have.
Teams with more cap space than talent looking to significantly increase the talent level are going to be disapointed. Prices will be up in FA with more dollars chasing less players.

We need to be smart here with this money. Instead dipping into an inflated FA market, we need to extend our 2007 potential FA's we want right now.
We should also look to extend key guys who will be up in 2008.

The 1993 team was at the wrong place and time to be so strong and deep. FA had just started and alot of teams didn't know how to manage the cap long term. Over the first few years you had alot of crazy contracts being thrown around out their. In the end it hurt the teams like the Raiders, but in the short term teams with loaded rosters like Dallas got raped.

This 2006 team is in a much better environment to be strong and deep.

I think this will ensure we resign those of our own players we want back; guys like Gurode, McBriar, Romo, Colombo (essentially this was his first full year as a starting RT; another offseason spent in our conditioning program will really help him), and probably Reeves & Gramatica (depending on his kickoffs).

The only money we need spend in FA would be for: 1. backup vet QB 2. decent vet FS if we sure Watkins can do good job in 07 (maybe Parrish is the guy?) 3. vet OG like Steinbach or Diehlman unless Riveria/Proctor are the guys 4. FG/kicker if Gramatica not the guy 5. backup to Ferguson if we think Stanley or one of the other players on the team is not good backup/successor.

I listed 5 possible FA acquisitions but really don't expect Cowboys to sign that many. Obviously some of the above could well be addressed in the draft which would lessen our FA acquisitions; but Parcells/Jones/Ireland seem now to know how to get good value for relatively cheap price (Kosier). After all Parcells already picking up players (2 recent OL players who could play several OL positions).

Finally, really don't see us adding many FAs but will address some problems in the draft but also hope that Parcells seeing in our practices some development by our younger players like McQuistan, Proctor, Hurd, Austin, etc.

I think the team should re-sign the players they can before free agency starts. Once teams have all of that cap room, the price for players will shoot up. Better to get deals done before then.

I don't see them paying big money for a guard, but either promoting one on the roster, or drafting one.

Having paid big money to Larry Allen, and then Rivera, and not getting the results they had hoped for, will probably make them think twice about doing it again (much like the Vanderjagt mistake).

The one big splash I hope they make is Adalius Thomas from Baltimore.

I think he'd make a great bookend to Ware.
