OXNARD, Calif. -- Anthony Spencer does not know if he will be ready for the regular-season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, but he knows his surgically repaired left knee is feeling a lot better.

i

Spencer“The way it’s feeling right now, I feel like we could be in a good place around Week 1,” Spencer said. “I’m hoping for it.”

Spencer had microfracture surgery on his left knee last fall after playing in just one game in 2013. Spencer only started sprinting in June and last week added resistance training. He said the next step is to add jumping and cutting.

The Cowboys placed Spencer on the active/physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp to keep the option of putting him on reserve/PUP open. If he is placed on reserve/PUP, then he would miss the first six games. The club could have a decision to make at the final cut down day on Aug. 30 if they project Spencer to be ready for the third or fourth game of the regular season.

“I feel I’m on way to getting a lot stronger,” Spencer said. “I feel it’s not really bothering me when I work out as much or when I wake up in the morning it’s not sore. It’s getting better.”...

With Lawrence out until sometime in Oct., we don't have the luxury of keeping a roster spot for Spencer hoping he can play after the first 3-4 games. Put him on PUP if he can't go for the opener. Halfway through the season, we can then decide on Spencer, our insurance policy.

With the tougher back side of the schedule. It's imperative both he and Lawrence are fully healthy and ready to play for th last 8-10 games. Won't expect much from the rookie since he'll have missed all of TC. But Spencer could add a huge boost to the line.

I've thought Spencer (and maybe Lawrence) would be back close to midseason so I'd love to be pleasantly surprised.

I've thought they would move Selvie to RDE and give Crawford most of the reps at LDE. It doesn't sound they will, at this point I think they should put Cesear Rayford at RDE exclusively and see if he can be the kind of pass rush specialist they thought he could be when they traded for him.

Im eating crow on Spencer.

I didnt expect anything from him, I didnt even expect him to play again. But seems he's taking the route of Bruce Smith. Bruce Smith came back from his and started the first game of the yr with no affects. He hasnt made it that far. But i think we could end up seeing Spencer participating in camp soon. I think he plays week 1.

Here's hoping Spencer stays on track with the progress he's made thus far in the offseason. He's certainly had to work hard for it.
Rehabbing from serious injuries of the type that he's had takes great dedication. This is especially so in the instance of a player's microfracture surgery rehabilitation. It'd be great to see him return to good form whenever he's able to make his appearance on the playing field. He'll probably be sorely needed with Lawrence likely out until sometime in October. He appears to be doing precisely what the vast majority of Cowboys fans doubted would be possible for him to accomplish. You've gotta respect him for that.

We are going to really need spence. I hope he can practice in a week or 2 and play in rushing situations come week one. Just posting in the other thread about Mincey and who play LDE in Nickel. So this is positive news.

The microfracture procedure has a high failure rate but there are guys that actually get significant cartilage growth and go on to have very productive years. Maybe Spencer is one of the lucky ones. We sure could use him.

There have been two players that had any kind of career with production come back in the NFL. Bruce Smith and a Denver Broncos T i think it was Lepsis.
