The Marion Barber trade rumors have been around for a while now, and both Todd Archer and Rich Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News have some fresh takes this week. Archer outlines a way it could still work while Gosselin says that the Cowboys wouldn't get more than a fourth- or fifth-rounder in return for the back.
Here's some background: Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports started the ball rolling with a rumor that a former Pro Bowl RB was on the trading block, with the insinuation that this mystery man was Marion Barber. (At the time, we also thought Clinton Portis, Marshawn Lynch and Willis McGahee fit the description).
Jason La Canfora of NFL.com added fuel to the fire, noting: "Executives around the league think Cowboys RB Marion Barber could be available." We haven't yet heard what type of package the Dallas Cowboys would expect in return for Barber, but it could be a discounted rate given his time missed due to injury in 2009.
We checked with ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on this one, and he's heard the rumors, but can't say there's anything substantive to them at this point. ESPN.com's Matt Mosley sees two reasons why it won't happen, while Bill Barnwell of Football Outsiders emailed in to say that Barber is best in a situation like his current one:
Football Outsiders![]()
Barber's simply no longer a main option"Barber benefits from playing behind a very good offensive line and alongside Tony Romo, but even in what was considered a down year, he finished tenth in DVOA in 2009, and was in the top-five in 2006 (first) and 2007 (fifth). Injury woes over the past two seasons suggest that Barber's probably better off as a 1A back limited to 170-180 carries, perhaps owing to his fierce, contact-laden style of running. He'd be a great fit as part of a combination with a speedier home run back, like, say, Felix Jones." - Bill Barnwell
