This league is such an add-one-brick, lose-a-brick league right now. It's sort of frustrating to watch. But everybody has to deal with it. It is hard to look on paper at the defense and think we'll have upgraded talent short of Jaylon Smith and/or Tapper coming in and playing at a high level on top of hitting on a couple of high defensive picks. But they do seem to have the staff and the system in place to find and develop talent, and the roster and cap where they want it, more or less.
I don't want to drag everything back to coaching, but I will say this: there's a lot to be said for having a roster mostly in place, and having systems established in each phase of the game and vets who can bring young players in line quickly. It makes things a lot easier when it comes to getting 53 guys on the same page over the course of a season. Whether you like the game day stuff or not, or like the coordinators or not, having that stability does help when it comes to building a roster quickly.
All we really need to do is upgrade the defensive talent. A lot. We'll do it a little this year. We'll do it more in VFA and in the draft again next year. At least you can feel it happening, though.
