Cowboys practice report, Day 2: Pt. 2
July, 25, 2010 Jul 256:45PM CTEmail Print Comments By Calvin WatkinsSAN ANTONIO -- The Cowboys finished their first two-a-day of training camp on Sunday. Here's the highlights of a pass-happy second practice.
*Quarterback Tony Romo looked a lot better in the second practice. He threw sharp passes to a variety of receivers and wasn't afraid to zip throws into some coverages. During the 7-on-7 passing drills, Romo was victimized by a drop from Miles Austin and a forced fumble. Jamar Wall stripped Austin after a short gain, and after a scramble for the loose ball the offense got it back.
*The secondary was very active in the second practice. Wall forced a fumble, Alan Ball picked off a pass from Jon Kitna -- though it was off a deflection -- Orlando Scandrick had an INT and Bryan McCann had a nice breakup of a pass.
*After three practices, right tackle Robert Brewster seems to be off to a slow start. Outside linebackers Anthony Spencer and Curtis Johnson each blew past Brewster during 11-on-11 drills. Johnson got a sack. Brewster has looked a little slugglish at times. Brewster also had a false start. On two defensive snaps, nose tackle Sean Lissemore was late getting off the ball, allowing the center to push him away from the line of scrimmage.
*Dez Bryant, the rookie wide receiver, continues to impress. He did a nice job of using his hands to catch a low ball and then brought the ball to his body as he hit the ground. However, there are still growing pains. Offensive cooridnator Jason Garrett and wide receivers coach Ray Sherman were talking to him about his assignments.
*Running back Marion Barber and wide receiver Patrick Crayton have had two solid days. Barber continues to run well. He's hitting holes faster and gliding through the defense. Crayton is making most of his catches and running good routes. He made a nice catch while covered by cornerback Mike Jenkins and a nice sideline catch off a Jon Kitna pass.
*Tight end Martellus Bennett (ankle), safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (shoulder), linebacker Stephen Hodge (knee) and defensive end Lorenzo Washington (hamstring) missed Sunday's practices. Linebacker Keith Brooking (knee) practiced in the afternoon after missing the morning session, and Brandon Williams (knee) missed the afternoon session after participating in the morning. Defensive end Josh Brent missed the afternoon practice with a broken bone in his left hand. He could return for Monday's practice.
*The attendance for the Sunday morning practice was 7,195 and the afternoon was 13,662. In total, 62,833 fans have attended the last three practices. ... Former San Antonio Spurs forward Bruce Bowen attended practice. Bowen is also a Cowboys fan.
Play of the Day: Dez's juggling act
July, 25, 2010 Jul 256:50PM CTEmail Print Comments By Tim MacMahonSAN ANTONIO – Dez Bryant made a play-of-the-day type of catch in the morning session, when he laid out to catch a deep ball with Pro Bowl cornerback Mike Jenkins all over him.
But Bryant made an even better catch in the afternoon session.
It was a busted play that turned into a thing of beauty. A botched exchange killed the timing of a flea-flicker, resulting in backup quarterback Jon Kitna scrambling around before throwing the ball up for grabs down the right sideline.
Bryant, who came back toward the line of scrimmage when he saw Kitna in trouble, soared over rookie cornerback Bryan McCann to get his fingertips on the high pass. He tipped it to himself and snatched it with his right hand as he landed.
“That’s ridiculous,” a veteran standing on the sideline said.
It was without question an amazing display of athleticism, body control and hands. However, there was some debate whether Bryant got both feet inbounds.
“I think I got two in,” Bryant said. “I don’t know. They don’t [have instant replay], so it counts.”
Wade Phillips presser breakdown
July, 25, 2010 Jul 257:07PM CTEmail Print Comments By Calvin WatkinsSAN ANTONIO -- Coach Wade Phillips said Saturday he didn't like talking about players unless he'd seen some tape of them performing in practice.
Well, after watching two practices, Saturday's and Sunday morning's Phillips had some praise for quite a few players.
Sean Lee, Brandon Williams, Victor Butler "looked good in two practices he's had," John Phillips, "stronger than he was last year," Felix Jones, Marion Barber, Leonard Davis, "real good dominant practice [Sunday morning]."
*Phillips talked about how so many players lost weight so they could play faster. Not so with Jones. While he is showing a burst, he's heavier than Barber. Phillips guessed that Barber is 214 pounds while Jones is 220. "It's just the way it worked out," Phillips said. "Marion, quickness wise, wanted to lose some weight. Felix has just matured. He's gotten stronger and gotten bigger."
*The Cowboys signed outside linebacker Brandon Sharpe on Sunday. Phillips likes plenty of linebackers on the roster, Cowboys have 13, for pass rush purposes.
"He made a really nice play the first play he got in there at linebacker," Phillips said. "We're going to take a look at him and see how he does."
Sharpe is listed at 6-3, 254 pounds.
*Mike Jenkins has emerged as one of the better defensive players on the roster. You could say DeMarcus Ware, Jay Ratliff and Jenkins are the Top 3. Phillips has so much confidence in Jenkins that he's allowing him to play either press coverage or backoff regardless of the situation.
"We coach every player individually within the scheme," Phillips said. "Some players we say yes you do this and you can do this and other players we say no you don't do that. They all have the same assignment but they're all different individuals and we've always coached them differently; that'fs the way I've always coached and I think that's what coaching is. To me that's what coaching is, coaching each individual differently."
