No deal yet for Kermey
posted: Monday, February 19, 2007 | Print Entry
The Falcons failed to reach a contract agreement over the weekend with defensive end Patrick Kerney. Barring a last minute miracle, Kerney plans to void the final two years of his contract Tuesday and become a free agent. With Bengals defensive end Justin Smith already franchised, Kerney will be competing against Charles Grant of the Saints and Dwayne White of the Bucs for the top money at defensive end. That could be reduced, too, if the Saints franchise Grant.
Re-signing Kerney is one of the Falcons' main offseason priorities.
• Accouting work: The Colts converted Peyton Manning's $10 million roster bonus into signing bonus and lowered his 2007 salary cap number from $16.53 million to $8.2 million. The Colts also did the same with the $3.9 million roster bonus of defensive end Robert Mathis. That lowered his cap number from $7.11 million to $3.99 million. The dual savings of those deals now gives the Colts $14.8 million of cap room. Before making those moves they were right at the cap.
• Special player: The Broncos reached a three-year, $2.55 million agreement with restricted free agent Louis Green. Included in the deal was a $300,000 signing bonus. Green is a valuable special teams player. He was scheduled to be a restricted free agent. Running backs Kyle Johnson and Cecil Sapp are the only two restricted free agents left on the Broncos' agenda. They also have six unrestricted free agents.
